The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Judge the Small Things
For Parasha Yitro
By Lovingneighbor 2-18-2006
This parasha has Moshe's father in law gathering his wife and children to him, setting up of judges, the preparation of the people to hear YHWH, and the giving of the law (Torah). What I am going to focus on here is the advice Yitro gave to Moshe. His main objective in this parasha was to have Moshe chose or call out men who could rightly judge the small matters.
Exo 18:21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear Elohim, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
Exo 18:22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
Exo 18:23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
OK lets look at what this means. We'll start first with the requirments of these chosen judges. There are three things mentioned:
Fear Elohim, men of truth, and hating covetousness. Let's examin these closer.
Fear (3373 Yahray) Elohim.
The first account of this word in scripture is with Avraham.
Gen 22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest Elohim, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
Second account of this word described Yosef
Gen 42:18 And Yosef said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear Elohim:
Third account describes Iyov (Job)
Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Iyov; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared Elohim, and eschewed evil.
These are the only three men this word is used for and the first three uses of the word in the Bible. After that it is is used to describe people or groups of people among people.
Psa 22:23 Ye that fear YHWH, praise him; all ye the seed of Ya'akov, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Yisrael.
Psa 25:12 What man is he that feareth YHWH? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
Psa 25:13 His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.
Psa 25:14 The secret of YHWH is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.
So we should look to Avraham, Yosef, and Iyov for examples of traits becoming of judges, and also of what it means biblically to fear YHWH. Avraham was willing to kill his own son for YHWH, Yosef said do this and live, implying if they didn't he would kill them, although he loved them, he loved YHWH more, and Iyov who had his sons killed and didn't curse Elohim for it. This implies I think you must hold YHWH highest over those who you love, and even your own life.
Second is men of Truth (571 Emet) stability, establishment.
Avraham a man of truth,
Gen 24:27 And he said, Blessed be YHWH God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, YHWH led me to the house of my master's brethren.
next is yes youg guessed it, Yosef
Gen 47:29 And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Yoseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt:
Next example is David
1Ki 3:6 And Shlomo said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
Next is EliYahu
1Ki 17:24 And the woman said to Eliyahu, Now by this I know that thou art a man of Elohim, and that the word of YHWH in thy mouth is truth.
Then ChizkiYahu
2Ch 31:20 And thus did ChizkiYahu throughout all Yahudah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before YHWH his Elohim.
Next is application: by 2 witnesses is lawlessness purged, by keeping the spirit and the letter of the law is the cup made clean
Pro 16:6 By mercy and truth lawlessness is purged: and by the fear of YHWH men depart from evil.
here it's linked to diligent enquiring or examining of the witnesses to find truth in 2 witnesses
Deu 17:4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:
Pro 14:25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.
What does it mean to be true, The definition also means established, as we see in the Torah for a matter to be established it must have at least two witnesses Deut 19:15. Like word and deed. When the maiden was married she was said to be a virgin, it would be established as truth when the sheets with blood were presented. When Yosef said he would carry the bones away, the doing of it would establish him as a man of truth. The main call here is that you must do what you say. YHWH is given credit for being truthfull because he does what he says he will do. A prophet who said something was going to happen and it didn't was not a true prophet but a false prophet and was to be put to death.
So these men were to be established by two witnesses and men that did what they said they would keeping his law in both letter and spirit.
Third is hating covetousness (1215 Behtsah) - gain, dishonest gain, profit:
Gen 37:26 And Yahudah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
1Sa 8:1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
1Sa 8:2 Now the name of his firstborn was Ya'el; and the name of his second, AviYahu: they were judges in Beersheba.
1Sa 8:3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
Job 22:3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous though coveting, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
Pro 1:18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
Pro 1:19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
Isa 33:15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
Isa 33:16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.
Isa 33:17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.
Eze 22:27 Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.
My conclusion is that these men who are called to judge the small things must have these traits, fearing YHWH more than anything else. being established and proved by the fruit they bear, and hating unjust gain, judging not because of how it helps them, but judging rightly all the time.
this verse sums up the three traits of a judge established by Messiah
Psa 19:9 The fear of YHWH is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of YHWH are true and righteous altogether.
Psa 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Let us look at the small things in our life and judge not according to what we will get in trouble for, but judging rightly as to what is good. If we are diligent in our evaluation of things and then making right judgment in all the small areas of our life, we may be counted worthy to be a judge to help Messiah. As the parable with the talents says if you are not counted worthy in the small amount given you even that will be taken from you. Let us judge even the smallest matters in our life , what we say, do and allow our families to say do and have in their posession and judge acording to truth and spirit whether we are doing right.
Shalom

SERVANT OR NOT?
By HUmble Talmid
Parisha Yitro
Shemot/Exodus 18:1-20:23(26)
This week’s parisha has so many thoughts and treasures to ponder. I know I say this every
time I do this, but I’m tellin’ ya…like Yochanan/John said about Yahushua in Yochanan/John 21:25,
" And there are also many other things which Yahushua (Yeshua/Jesus) did, the
which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not
contain the books that should be written. Amen."
This could be said of this parisha and all of the Torah if people would break it down
and write books on their understandings and their gleanings from the text.
There are two points I would like to break down for you tonight, but I do want you to
take it with a grain of salt and study for yourself to see if what I say is true. Too many people
listen to others and just believe what they say without checking it out for themselves and
allowing the truth to be established in there own minds. They build beliefs on others
thoughts and studies. So, if you just build your beliefs and entrust your "salvation" in others
studies and beliefs, you are building on sand. And, when the waves come and the tide rises
you will be washed away, and your building will be no more. Be responsible and study! Only
you will stand before the Master and have to give an explanation for your life. Make your
foundation strong. Like the saying "If you want something done right, you need to do it
yourself ", this must be engrained in your walk. Again, it is your walk!
Ok, first thing we need to realize about this parisha is that the people have spent a
little time in the wilderness. They have witnessed many miracles of the Father and have
tasted of his provisions. This parisha begins with Yitro, Moshe’s father in law (a priest form
Midian), coming to Moshe’ with Moshe’s wife and two sons’. It does not say why he came to
Moshe’, but my take on it would seem that He heard of what YHWH had done to Egypt and
the Pharaoh. And, if he served other elohim, maybe we can see a fear for YHWH beginning
in this man, for the word says, "the fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom.
We then see Yitro rejoicing for all of the goodness that YHWH had done to Israel
when he comes to Moshe’. Once he is among these people he can see the greatness with his
own eyes and he blesses YHWH and states that NOW he knows that YHWH is greater than
all elohim. Two witnesses. He then took a burn offering and sacrifices to YHWH,
establishing this thing within his life. Let’s break this down briefly. Yitro first heard of the
things the Father had done. Then he went to search it out to see if it was true. Once he saw
that it was true and good, he then acted upon this belief by taking a burn offering and
sacrifices for Elohim. By taking these steps he will produce fruit in his life and the fruit will
be a witness of how he allowed this to affect his life. We need to take these steps in our own
life and produce good fruit. That will be what we have to offer when we stand before our
Father. That will be a measure of our lives.
Next we see Yitro observing Moshe’ as he sits before the people and judges between
one another, and then makes known the statutes of YHWH. Yitro reveals to Moshe’ that this
is not a good thing. He says that Moshe’ will wear away along with the people if Moshe’
continues doing this. Why? Yitro then offers counsel to Moshe’. He says that Moshe’
should act as a representative to YHWH in the peoples behalf. Isn’t he already doing
this? Yitro takes it a little further however, he says that Moshe’ needs to teach them the
ordinances and the laws , show them the way they must walk, and the work they
must do . It was time for the people to be held responsible for their lives and growth and
understanding of the Father and His ways! He did not stop there however, he counseled
Moshe’ to find able men out of the people.
What type of able men? Men who feared Elohim, men of truth, hating
covetousness. I want to break this down briefly also. Ask yourselves, as I go through this, if
you possess these traits. Ok, men who FEAR Elohim. What does this mean? Webster
breaks it down as such:
" In scripture, fear is used to express a filial or a slavish passion. In good men, the fear
of God is a holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and real
love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun every thing that can
offend such a holy being and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience."
I see this as a reverent or respectful fear that goes beyond ourself. All of these traits
you will see have to deal with being selfless if you look to the words throughout scripture.
Next, are men of TRUTH. There again, if you search scripture for this word you will see that
TRUTH is something that is right or correct, it is not partial, but pure, it is something that is
certain and that has been established, not wavering. Again, this is not our truth, but The
TRUTH, that has been established and is void of our input. So this type of man would be
leaning on The TRUTH of the Father and not his own truth.
Next, is a man who HATES COVETOUSNESS. What do you think covetousness
is? This is a commandment you know. If you again turn to the scriptures for the definition
of covetousness, you will find that it is related to greed, but more than greed, it is dishonest
gain. It is being selfish and only thinking of gain for yourself. The fruit of this can result in
stealing, adultery, and even murder. Covetousness is the desiring of personal gain over any
other person. Whether by dishonesty or murder. It does not matter. No wonder why they
are to hate it! Drive it as far away as possible.
These able men would then rule over the people when it came to judgments of the
small matters. With the larger matters they would take them to Moshe’. What a beautiful
picture. Mose’ has been portrayed as the messianic model of Yahushua (Yeshua/Jesus). The
people were to judge the small matters. Could this be the earthly things? They were
then told to take the greater things to Moshe’ who, in the model, represents Yahushua
(Yeshua/Jesus). Could this be the spiritual matters? Think and study this one out.
Yitro states that if Moshe’ would set this up and Elohim would command him to do so, then
Moshe’ would be able to endure, and the people would go to their place in peace. Lots of
good stuff here!
The last thought of the evening is out of the last half of the parisha. What kind of
gift do you get for the one who owns everything? How can it be special? We can
see that the Elohim we serve is true and just. He kept his word with Avraham. He delivered
the people of Israel from Pharaoh’s hands. Shemot/Exodus 19:4 says:
" ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I
bare you on eagle’s wings, and brought you to me ".
This verse is kind of a mystery to some, but I see a beautiful picture here also. In
Egypt there were many gods that were worshiped. Some of the most important gods to the
Egyptians then where images of men with heads of birds. For example, Thoth was a god who
gave the Egyptians their hieroglyphics and there communication; this was depicted as a man
with a bird-like head and a pen. Horus, was their god of the sky and most of all, their
protector, he also was depicted as a man with a hawks head. Last, but certainly not least was
the Egyptian’s most high god, Ra. Ra was their sun god and their most important. Some
pharaohs claimed to be imparted with Ra. Ra was depicted as a man with the head of a hawk
and a large sun on the head of the hawk.
The reason I am telling this to you is because Shemot/Exodus 19:4 can also be
interpreted to say " ye have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you above the
large bird of prey’s wings, and brought you unto myself ". To me this makes more sense. I am
not saying this is what it means, study for yourself! YHWH confounded and destroyed not
only the Egyptians, but also their high gods. It says earlier on in the Torah in
Shemot/Exodus 12:12:
" For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn
in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute
judgment: I am YHWH ".
To me this is a beautiful picture followed by Shemot/Exodus 19:5:
" Now therefore, if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then
you shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people : for all the earth is mine".
This is what you get the one whom owns it all, and it will be very special. It is you, all
you. You must realize that we are not our own. All the earth is His. We can choose to serve
the Master of the earth (Satan) or not, but we must choose to serve the New Master (YHWH).
Many people think that they own themselves. They are dead wrong. You are either serving
YHWH or Satan, there is no in between. WE ARE SERVANTS- GET IT THROUGH YOUR
HEAD! Many do not like to hear that, but brothers and sisters…it is the truth! You cannot
choose not to serve Satan or YHWH. If you have not chosen, it has been chosen for you. For
scripture says in John 8:38-44 :
" I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye
have seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our
father. Yahushua saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's
children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man
that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of
fornication; we have one Father, even Elohim. Yahushua said
unto them, If Elohim were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth
and came from Elohim; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not
understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your
father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from
the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of
it ".
Whose servant will you be? I entreat you to search yourself. Even if you claim to
serve YHWH, if you do not obey his voice, or keep his covenants, how can you be anything
but that of the earth?
There is so much more in this parisha, but I believe I must end this so that you can
chew on some of this. Please take the time tonight or tomorrow (or both), and search
yourself and the scriptures to make sure that you have chosen to be a servant first, and then
at what capacity will you serve. Whole-heartedly, or only partially? How much time do you
have to produce fruit worthy of offering? Don’t wait!
May YHWH direct your paths as you study. Shabbat Shalom!

Preparing You for Elohim
For Parasha Yitro
By Lovingneighbor 1-26-2008
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Exodus also called Shemot, and is called Yitro which means 'His Excellence'. In this weeks parasha:
- Yitro Moshe's father in law took Moshe's wife and 2 sons and went to him when he heard all YHWH did
- Moshe told Yitro all that YHWH did for them and Yitro rejoiced and blessed YHWH
- The next day all the people came before Moshe to judge matters and Yitro asked him why
- Yitro said he shall appoint judges that fear Elohim, men of truth who hate coveting to help him
- Moshe appointed judges and they judged the small matters and he judged the great matters
- Yisra'el came to Mount Sinai and Moshe went up to talk with YHWH
- Moshe told the people all YHWH said and they said all he has spoken we will do
- YHWH told Moshe to sanctify the people for the third day when YHWH will speak to the people
- On the 3rd day there was thunder, lightning, and a thick cloud on the mountain and the voice of a trumpet
- YHWH called Moshe up to the mountain and warned him not to let the people break through
- Elohim spoke all these words saying I am YHWH who brought you out of Egypt
- You shall have no other elohim before me
- You shall not have, make, or worship any idols
- You shall not take the name of YHWH in vain
- Remember the sabbath, 6th days you shall work but the 7th day is the sabbath of rest
- Honor your father and mother
- You shall not murder
- You shall not commit adultery
- You shall not steal
- You shall not lie
- You shall not covet
- The people saw the thunderings and told Moshe he should speak to Elohim and they would listen to him
- Moshe drew near to the thick darkness and YHWH told him to tell Yisra'el not to make elohim of silver and gold
- YHWH commands Moshe how to build an altar for Him
- Haftarah - YHWH prepares to send YeshaYahu to the people
This week we are going to see a pattern of events and they start with Yitro observing the people coming to Moshe day and night and when Yitro asked why Moshe answered:
Exo 18:15 And Moshe said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire(D'rash) of Elohim:
The word enquire is a root word D'rash which means to ask enquire, seek, or follow, It's spelled Dalet, Resh, Shin which in the Ancient Hebrew could be Door, beginning, press or test. To d'rash is likened to understanding. It is the third level. It is what you are looking for when examining the two witnesses. Many people misuse the term d'rash. They use it to describe almost anything they talk about it. But really it is best described as to seek. One of the big problems with religion is they don't seek. They repeat. They seek after the answer and don't want to know how to get the answer. It's like someone who wants a passing score on the test but doesn't care to really know the subject. We see this in modern schools all the time. People become good at memorizing the answers to pass tests and not to retain or know what the answers really mean.
So this leads to the next point. The people came to Moshe who represents the Torah to d'rash seek after Elohim. At the time Moshe interacted with YHWH and the people had to come to him to seek YHWH. In the same way we must go to Moshe ie the Torah to seek after YHWH both day and night which also implies one should study the Torah at morning and evening times along with their prayers. THis is what the people did.
Yitro suggested that he select men with certain traits to be jusges over smaller matters and then if they have a great matter they can come to him and that this would bring all the people to their place in peace. There are a few things that this may imply. One is that people can't just use the Torah when it's convienent for them. We see this all the time now. People have a bible but they don't know (yadah) the bible. They use it but don't live it and become a judge because of it. Many people lived among Moshe and yet they didn't all have judgment. I see this as a pattern of transferring knowledge from the Torah ie Moshe to people who will also live Torah like Moshe ie the judges. If more people were living the Torah and leting it change their judgment we wouldn't need the Book because it would be in our hearts. I think this is iterated in the verse about taking the law out of the stony heart and putting it in the heart of flesh. Writing it on your inward parts models this pattern of Moshe appointing judges. He is taking himself and putting his judgment in the hearts of the people.
After doing this they were going to get direct access to YHWH. This proved to be too much for them and so they again wanted to have Moshe as the mediator to seek YHWH. What it really did is show them they were not ready for direct access. I see this happen again when Mashiach came and the world wasn't really ready for him. People today wouldn't be ready for Mashiach in my opinion. We have the Torah and it's a great mediator for us to seek or d'rash YHWH. This is why I think it's hard for people to really fear YHWH like at the mountain because we are used to dealing with the Word, like the people who dealt with Moshe. If you won't seek YHWH through Moshe why would you think you could go straight to the source. This reminds me of people thinking they will boldly appraoch the throne and all of that kind of talk. I think not.
The point is that Moshe was to prepare them for the meeting with YHWH and they should clean their clothes and prepare themselves and that is what we are doing by studying Torah. Just like in the haftarah portion we have Yeshayahu being a prophet to the people who lack ears to hear and eyes to see, then they will again get a prophet to speak to them. People always seem to reject the order of things and want to go straight to the source though they are not even close to ready. Stay focused on the door that is before you. The Torah that will cleanse you and prepare you for the time when you will be in the presence of YHWH and feel like those who have been there that you will die if you stand in His presence. The Torah prepares us for this time and if you think you are ready now don't worry most people do until it happens. As the proverbs say
Pro 25:6 Put not forth yourself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:
Pro 25:7 For better it is that it be said unto you, Come up here; than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince whom your eyes have seen.
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
