Passover Haggadah Lovingneighbor

This is a Passover Haggadah I put together for a Congregation I used to belong to. Though I assembled it. I was also assembling it for people not wanting to move to far from the traditional Jewish Seders. It's my first Haggadah I made and hope to do more that are specifically the way I would want them. If you don't have a game plan for Passover I hope this helps. If there are mentions of songs I will try and include them, Some are my own Songs if you would like the chords to play them on guitar contact me, and some are from FFOZ's Passover Encounter Haggadah. If you use it, let me know, and let me know what you think. Some of the things I added I did studies for to Bring to light more meaning then traditional seders that do many things without putting much meaning to them. I also tryed to put it in proper order in context of Messiah and the process of redemption. Many traditional Jewish Seders have things in scattered places. Since it was designed for a congregation that reaches out to Christians, I left the name Lord in in some places. If this is going to be done privatley I would insert YHWH where it belongs. Also in the Prayers since this was designed also for Messianic Jews, the words Adonai are used in the prayer, if used Privatley it should be YHWH. Enjoy

Introduction -
Shalom and welcome to ________ Fellowship! My name is _________ and we're glad to have you all here for our Passover Seder. Some of you may have never taken part in a Passover Seder, some of you may have come to just observe, and some of you have done traditional and non traditional seders and are here to partake in this Passover together. Though the core elements are the same, there are different variations, and traditions. We try and incorporate some variety in our seder. You may observe or partake in some or all parts however you feel comfortable. We will explain each portion and where there is multiple traditions we will explain them. We hope you enjoy yourself and learn from our Passover Experience. Guiding us through this passover experience will be (Main Speaker). Hello everyone my name is ____ and I will be your Guide as we begin this Passover some of you may be surprised to find out Passover is all about our Messiah and Saviour Jesus or Yahushua in the Hebrew. It's also a great way to understand the roots of your faith. Let's start out with a traditional Hebrew prayer while we light the Menorah. This prayer blesses our God and thanks him for bringing us to this Passover. We will say the Hebrew first then the English- Opening Prayer -
Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynu Melech HaOlam asher kidishanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivahnu le'kadosh HaPesach
Blessed are you O'Lord our God, King of the Universe. Who has sanctified us by your commandments and commanded us to set apart your Passover
Let's look to the scriptures and read the original command to keep the passover. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 
Exo 12:2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. 
Exo 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: 
Exo 12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. 
Exo 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: 
Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. 
Exo 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 
Exo 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 
 
Exo 12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. 
Exo 12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. 
Exo 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover. 
Exo 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. 
Exo 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. 
Exo 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. 
Exo 12:15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 
Exo 12:16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. 
Exo 12:17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. 
Exo 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 
Exo 12:19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. 
Exo 12:20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread. 
 
And let's also read what the New Testament or in Hebrew the Brit Chadasha has to say about how the Passover relates to us.
 
1Co 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 
1Co 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 
 
Paul admonishes us when we keep the feast to not keep it with old leaven which is a model of sin. Neither with the sin of malice and wickedness, but without sin (unleavened) in sincerity and truth.
 
Let's take a small moment and ask forgiveness for our sins. 
 
Our Father who are in heaven, please forgive us all for our sins and purge the leaven in our lives. We bless you and thank you in your precious name YHWH, and the name of your son Yahshua. Amein.
 
 
- The Items of the Seder Table -
Let's now look at the table and see the items will be using. We will explain what their significance is as we go along. But first let's just get familiar with what we have.
 
First we have the Matzah or Unleavened Bread meaning there is no yeast or raising agent in it. 
Next we have the Maror or bitter herbs, which in this case is horseradish.
We also have the Karpas or parsley.
This is the Charoset a mixture of apples, nuts, and wine.
These are the glasses for 4 Cups of Wine or juice that we will use for certain portions.
These are glasses for the Cup of the Plagues
This is Elijah's or in Hebrew EliYahu's Cup.
This is Salt Water.
And this is the Z'roah or lamb shank bone.
 
Some of these items are mentioned in the text like the bitter herbs, unleavened bread, wine and salt water, and some are tradition. We will explain the items as they are used.
 
Let's get started with a Hebrew prayer thanking God for bringing us together. As with most prayers, they will be in Hebrew first then in English.
 
- Blessing for Bringing Us Together -
Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynu Melech HaOlam sheh-heh-ki-yah-nu v'ki-y'mah-nu 
v'hee-gee-yah-manu la-z'man ha-zeh. 
 
Blessed are you O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has preserved us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.
 
- The Four Cups -
At Passover or in Hebrew Pesach, there are four cups to remind us of the four steps God takes his people through to dwell with him in the kingdom. The wine or juice of each cup represents the blood of our Messiah that was shed for us so that we may dwell with God in the kingdom. Let's look at Exodus 6:6 for an explanation of the four cups.
 
Exo 6:6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: 
Exo 6:7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 
 
1st Cup – Cup of Sanctification
2nd Cup – Cup of Deliverance
3rd Cup – Cup of Redemption
4th Cup – Cup of Completion
 
- The Cup of Sanctification -
The first cup is the Cup of Sanctification. 
 
“I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.” 
 
Exo 8:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me. 
 
The Lord desired to set his people apart in order that they would enter into the process of sanctification with Him and learn to worship God in the way He wanted. In order for them to do this they needed to be brought out of Egypt and their pagan ways so they could be sanctified and learn to serve their new master. Let's drink this cup in remembrance that it's through the door of the blood of the lamb that we are brought out of the life of sin through the blood of our Messiah Yahshua. Let's bless our Father for the wine or teaching of this cup.
 
- Wine Blessing -
Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynu Melech HaOlam Boray P'ree HaGafen.
 
Blessed are you O'Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine.
 
Drink 1st cup – Play “we're leaving”
 
- Ur-khatz or Hand Washing -
Next is the Ur-khatz or hand washing.
In Exodus 30:17-20 The Lord gave instructions to Moses concerning the tabernacle..
 
Exo 30:17 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 
Exo 30:18 Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. 
Exo 30:19 For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat: 
Exo 30:20 When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not
 
Just as Aaron was to wash his hands and feet before approaching the altar, so to we recognize our need for spiritual cleansing.
 
Psa 24:3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? 
Psa 24:4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 
Psa 24:5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 
 
 
 
Ryan washes his hands while asking the Father to create in him a clean heart. All who want to partake in the hand washing are also allowed to do so. Potential performance of song create in me a clean heart.
 
- Z'roah or Lamb Shank bone -
 
The Guide holds up the Z'roah and says:
This is the Z'roah it is here to remind us of the importance of the sacrifice of the lamb. 
Exodus 12:27 tells us...
“And you shall say, 'It is the Lord's sacrifice of the Passover, because He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses.' And the people bowed their heads and worshipped.” 
 
John the Immerser, as he saw Yahshua approaching said, 
"Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"(John 1:29)
 
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)
 
The rabbis have given the shank bone on the seder plate a special name. It is called the Z'roah Adonai - "The Arm of the Lord". This very same passage in Isaiah begins with the words, 
"Who has believed our report and to whom has the Arm of the Lord been revealed?"
 
- Maror or Bitter Herbs -
 
Why do we eat bitter herbs? It is to remind us how bitter our lives of sin were before Torah and how the Egyptians embittered the lives of our fathers in while they were in Egypt as it is written:
 
 
Exo 1:14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour. 
 
Let's bless the Father for his his instruction in the Bitter Herbs to remind us of the consequences of sin, and to keep us from that path of destruction and to not return to sin.
 
- Blessing for Maror -
Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynu Melech Haolam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu al achilat maror.
 
Blessed are you O'Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to eat bitter herbs.
 
 
As we take the Maror, let us remember the bitterness of sin and bondage.
 
Try not to drink after the Maror if possible allow the taste to sting and linger in your mouth and think of the cry of Israel to God to take away this bitterness.
 
People eat Maror or Bitter Herbs with Matzah as Guide reads this verse.
 
Exo 3:7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 
Exo 3:8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 
 
 
- Karpas – Parsley and Salt Water -
 
Notice on your plate there is parsley and a bowl of salt water. These will be used for this next portion.
 
The parsley represents the Hyssop used to apply the blood of the lamb to the doorpost. Hyssop is used in the scriptures for purification. 
 
Psa 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 
 
The blood of the lamb and the hysopp point to our purification in Messiah.
 
The salt water is has two meanings. Some say it represents the tears of those who cried out to God because of the hard bondage:
 
 
 
Exo 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. 
Exo 2:24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 
 
Salt is a preservative, Israel is preserved because of the covenant God made with Avraham. Salt water is also used to draw out blood from meats. Interesting that the Hyssop is used with the blood of the lamb to draw out of Egypt the children of God, They then pass through the salt water (Sea of Suf) where they are preserved and saved from Pharoah's armies. But it's also interesting that all these elements come together to explain: in our life of sin and hard bondage our tears or crying out is heard and God who hears our cry sends his son, whose blood is drawn out to purify us and preserve his people. 
 
 
 
- Prayer for Preserving Us -
Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynu Melech HaOlam asher v'yee-shem-meraynu
 
Blessed are you O'Lord our God, King of the Universe who has preserved us
 
Dip the Parsley in the salt water and eat it and let us remember to preserve our Messiah's teachings and remember the blood he shed for us.
 
All people dip the parsley in the salt water and eat it while the Guide reads this verse:
 
Jos 24:17 For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed.
 
- Matzah -
 
What do the three Matzahs (Unleavened Bread) represent? Some say they represent Messiah and the two beside him on the cross, while other say it represents Messiah and the two witnesses. The Matzah is unleavened bread. Bread is a model of the word of God. Leaven is a model of sin that puffs us up. Bread is also like man, as we are created by the very word of God. When we add sin to what God originally created we puff up and become something we weren't meant to be. Messiah who had no sin represents the unleavened bread. The Matzah has both stripes and holes. This represents the stripes Messiah took for us and the piercings he endured for our sake. When our Messiah delivers us out of Egypt (the world of sin) we leave behind the leaven (sin).
 
- Yahatz -
 
The person guiding the seder breaks the middle Matzah in two, leaves the whole ones, and hides the other half of the middle Matzah under the wrap for the Afikomen.
 
We break the one in the middle as Messiah's flesh was broken for us. We wrap the one to symbolize the burial wrapping of Messiah and put it away. There are 2 pieces because though he is gone he leaves behind his teachings. And we look forward to his return.
The person guiding the seder elevates the Matzah plate and says:
 
This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Just as they suffered among the Egyptians, so Messiah suffered in the world. 
 
Mat 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 
Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. 
 
Let all those who are hungry, and all those who are thirsty come and celebrate the Passover. At present we celebrate it here. But soon we hope to celebrate it in Israel with our Messiah. This year as servants in the world, but we look forward to being freed and celebrating it with Yahshua in Israel.
 
- Charoset -
 
What does this represent? The Charoset represents the mortar that Israel had to make while in bondage to Egypt. Though separate, they were part of building the very buildings of Egypt. They were told to make bricks without straw because they wanted to serve their God and Pharaoh wanted to keep them so busy in his world to forget their God and be to busy to serve him. This was a very grevious workload to bring on Israel and yet even as God was drawing his Children to him their affliction from the world seemed to get worse. This Charoset represents the Mortar of bondage but is sweet because we have a saviour who will not leave us but will deliver us. As we put the Charoset on the unleavened bread lets remember though Messiah is our support and is with us even when our affliction is great he is there also lifting us up.
 
All people can put some Charoset on a piece of Matzah and eat it while the guide says the words of our master Yahshua:
 
Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 
Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. 
 
The Readings -
 
We are commanded to remember the passover and keep it, teaching it to our children. Lets read and remember why we observe passover.
 
Reader 1
 
Exo 13:3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. 
Exo 13:4 This day came ye out in the month Abib. 
Exo 13:5 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month. 
 
Exo 13:6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD. 
Exo 13:7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters. 
Exo 13:8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. 
Exo 13:9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD'S law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt. 
Exo 13:10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year. 
 
 
 
- Four Questions -
 
Child 1
 
Why is this night different from all other nights? 
 
Father: Because God told us to remember the day when he brought us out of Egypt by a strong hand.
 
Child: Why do we eat bitter herbs, and Charoset?
 
Father: Because we are to remember how bitter our bondage is and yet how sweet is our deliverance from it.
 
Child: Why do we hide the piece of Matzah and then bring it back?
 
Father: Because Yahshua our saviour went away from us but he will return.
 
Child: Why on this night do we sit reclined?
 
Father: Because we were once slaves, and God in his mercy has redeemed us and given us rest and we will rest with him when he returns.
 
The Father commands us to diligently teach our children and pass on the things he has showed us to the next generation. 
 
Perform “Passing on”
 
- The Story of Passover -
 
The story of Passover actually starts starts way before Moses with Joseph the favored son of Jacob. God gave him dreams that he would be lifted up above his brethren. His brothers who were jealous of their brother cast him in a pit and sold him off to slavery. In Egypt he was falsely accused and cast into prison where he interpreted some dreams. Later the Pharaoh had dreams no one could interpret and Joseph was called on to explain. He explained there was to be a great plenty and a great famine. Pharaoh put Joseph in charge to save them from the famine. Joseph saved them and his brothers and father and they moved to Egypt to settle in Goshen and grew and flourished. 
 
There came a new Pharaoh to the throne who did not know Joseph. He feared the Israelites were to blessed and strong that they may turn on him so he put them under bondage and hard work. He put taskmasters over Israel to make them build his kingdom. Even though he put them under cruel bondage the People of God flourished so he ordered the firstborn of all the children to be drowned in the river. Under all the afflictions they cried out to God who heard their cry and remembered the covenant he made with Abraham. So God raised up a deliverer and redeemer for them called Moses. He sent Moses to declare the commandments of the Lord.
 
“Let my people go that they may serve me!”
 
But Pharaoh would not let his people go so God brought plagues upon the house of Pharaoh.
 
- The Plagues -
 
The Guide shows everyone the cup of plagues and says:
 
We do not drink from this cup it is the cup of plagues. God brought these plagues on those people who would not obey him. We will put a drop of wine on our napkin for each plague that was put upon the Egyptians from God's cup of wrath. As we do this our guide will say the name of the plagues in Hebrew and we will say them in English in remembrance of what disobedience and sin brings.
 
Blood – Dahm
Frogs – Tzefarday'a
Vermin – Kee'neem
Flies – A'rohv
Pestilence – Dever
Boils – Sh'kheen
Hail – Barad
Locusts – Ar'beh
Darkness – Choshech
Slaying of the firstborn – Ma'kas b'khoros
 
Although many see the plagues as a grievous thing, the often times forget that our God is a merciful God. Not outrightly destroying the wicked, but giving them many chances to repent and obey him. Pharaoh would not repent and let the people go until God slayed all the firstborn of Egypt. The same thing Pharaoh wanted to do to Israel to lift up his kingdom was done to him. Though we remember the plagues brought upon Egypt by obeying God these plagues were not to come upon his Children. So we will now remove the cup of plagues and the napkin and take it outside of our house. Take a last look upon the napkin of the ten plagues and remember that God did not bring these things upon his people and the plague of the death angel was outside not permitted to enter into the houses of the children of God.
 
Selected men take away the cups and napkins and set them outside while the guide says:
 
Exo 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. 
 
This first cup has been all about being brought out of Egypt. When we remember the children of Israel's exodus we are actually commanded to remember our own exodus from our lives of sin:
 
Exo 13:8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. 
 
Each of us can remember the point in our lives when God brought us out of our old world and drew us to him. We each have our own testimony. This week is a time to reflect and remember how God brought us out of our world of sin and be thankful for the blood of his son Yahshua. Tonight we will hear from a few people who will share their personal testimony about their exodus from Egypt. 
 
Two people come up and share their testimonies.
 
- The Cup of Deliverance -
The second Cup is the Cup of Deliverance
 
“ I will deliver you from the bondage of the Egyptians”
 
All Israel and the mixed multitude was passed over when they accepted the blood of the lamb. That was cup one. The next step in the process was deliverance, a type of baptism in the sea of Suf some translate it red sea. To be cleansed from their old lives in Egypt and separated or made holy. But this people would shortly realize that the world they came out of didn't want to let them go.
 
Exo 14:9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon. 
Exo 14:10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. 
 
Israel was afraid because what seemed impossible for them is not impossible with God.
 
Exo 14:13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation (Yahshua) of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. 
Exo 14:14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. 
 
Let's drink this Cup of Deliverance remembering that it isn't easy to separate ourselves from the life world of sin but with God's help we can do it. Messiah is of course washing his wife with the Torah to present her blameless.
Let's bless the Father for this wine and teaching.

God has brought us all out of Egypt and is washing us in his word, and because of these great works we are to be grateful and also for those things he has not yet performed.
 
 
Let's be thankful for each of the things our Father has done:
 
When He brought us out of Egypt and and had not yet executed judgment on the Egyptians, We should have been grateful.
When He executed judgments against the Egyptians and had not yet executed judgment on their gods, We should have been grateful.
When He executed judgments against their gods and had not yet put to their firstborn to death, we should have been grateful.
When He put to death their firstborn but had not yet given us their riches, We should have been grateful.
When He gave us their riches and had not yet split the sea, We should have been grateful.
When He split the sea for us and had not yet led us through it on dry land, We should have been grateful.
When He led us through on dry land and had not yet sunk our foes in it, We should have been grateful.
When He sunk our foes in it and had not yet satisfied our needs in the desert, We should have been grateful.
When He satisfied our needs in the desert for forty years and had not yet fed us with manna, We should have been grateful.
When He fed us with manna and had not yet given us the sabbath, we should have been grateful.
When He had given us the Sabbath and not yet brought us to mount Sinai, We should have been grateful.
When He brought us to mount Sinai and had not yet given us the Torah, We should have been grateful.
When He gave us the Torah and had not yet brought us into the promised land, We should have been grateful.

Once the children of Israel crossed through the Sea of Suf (Red Sea) and were delivered from the Egyptians they sang the song of Moses to God. After God gave our forefathers so much and has done so much for us therefore we are bound to thank, praise, laud, glorify, extol, honor, bless, exalt, and reverence him who performed all these things for us. He brought us from slavery to freedom, from sorrow to joy, from mourning to yom tov, from servitude to redemption. Let us therefore sing a song of rejoicing for the deliverance of God!
