What is Leaven?
Reply Quote

Shalom all,

I am posting this in a hurry and will put together a better list soon. But every year I go back at this time and look up what the different ingrediants are in the foods we eat. Just like with gelatin there are many sneaky ways leaven gets labeled. Here is a rough list i have been working on. Many people interpret leaven differently. Some say you only have to get out the yeast, but chemical leavening is OK, some say if the yeast isn't active it's ok, while others go as far as avoiding all grain products and even cheese if it ever fermented. There are extremes on both sides, some that in my opinion don't go far enough, and some that go too far.

I think God leaves some things a little gray to see what kind of offering will we bring. the least we can get away with ( be careful, Many people lost much over a bite of food ie.. Adam and Eve, Esau and Jacob) while others I think can take it too far where it is outside the scope of the original commandment. I think it's good though for each of us to examine up to the extreme and then where we feel wisdom and balance is. Here is my list and it's 1:30 in the morning and I haven't got to do the research on all of these yet and I will put a more formal study on these so this is just going up because we're so close to Passover.

Leavening:

  • Yeast (comes in many forms:brewers yeast found also in vitamins and suplements, Torula yeast in chips and food, autolyzed yeast, gravies, and food.),
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • sourdough
  • Sodium Bicarbonate ( also found in toothpaste, antacids, cleaning supplies)
  • cream of tartar
  • sodium acid pyrophosphate
  • mono,di,tri calcium phosphate
  • ammonium bicarbonate
  • potassium bicarbonate
  • sodium aluminum phosphate

some others normally done by some orthodox jews are following but I haven't studied why and decided if I will include them they are:

  • beer
  • athyl alcohol
  • distilled vinegar
  • extracts
  • malts

what's sometimes as important is knowing what ones aren't leavening agents, here is the list of food additives that are not as far as I can see although they are in the same family as some of the other ones:

  • mono, di, tri sodium phpsphates
  • mono, di, tri potassium phosphates
  • cornstarch
  • calcium casenate
  • sodium carbonate
  • calcium carbonate

It's also important to check your dog food, tri sodium pyrophosphate and some variants are in it , I feed my dog dinty moore stew during passover because most dog foods have leavening. also check biscuits, clean out your car, emergency packs many times have survival food stores. I pull out the oven, and fridges, I think I'll find a place outside for the toaster I don't see how you can really get all the crumbs out. clean the oven. if you have kids, they may have snacks in the daiper bag. empty your vacuum bag. That's my short list of reminders, I hope it helps and I will get a more exact list soon.Shalom!

A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
