Behar / Bechukotai Parasha Thoughts, Studies, and Comments

The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Rest
For Behar / Bechukotai Parasha
By Lovingneighbor 5-20-2006

This weeks Parasha is another double Parasha ending the last two parashas for Vayikra. It starts with the law of the land sabbath, yavel or jubile laws, not oppressing your brothers, land redemption, interest, kinsman redeemer, Blessings and cursings for obeying, Levels of Chastisement and punishment, The cost of a vow, and sanctifying and dedicating things to God.

Many people work and work and work, never taking a rest. God I imagine is the hardest worker of all and even he took a rest. He set it apart as one of the first traits of our Father. He created, and evaluated his creation and then rested. Then after he took his own rest, he gave rest to all mankind as a perpetual covenant when he hallowed the seventh day. When we rest we are touching a trait of our Father and recieving his gift I believe. When we compare YHWH and Pharoah we see YHWH brought Israel out of Egypt to be his servant:

Lev 25:55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am YHWH your Elohim.

The difference is YHWH cares for his servants and Pharoah didn't. One of the first ways we see this is the model of them ceasing from their work to keep a feast to YHWH. They then are given another rest from gathering manna on the seventh day, then the commandment of keeping the sabbath. In this weeks parasha it says:

Lev 26:2 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am YHWH.

Sabbaths is plural for all his sabbaths, weekly, annual (holy days), and all others like his land sabbath. It's interesting that even the land gets a rest. As a matter of fact much of the great punishment happens and exile because of violation of the land sabbath. Next is the Yavel, or Jubile. it is like a sabbath for the children of Israel for their inheritance.

One of the great traits of God since the beginning is that he gives things a break. Things accross the board need a break and actually function better when given one. Rest is easily related to sleep. Our bodies require us to rest every day. If we do we operate better if we don't we don't do well. It's like every day God is teaching us the importance of rest. It's the concept of mercy. It's not working an animal, person, or field unmercifully without giving it rest. This is like the concept of the Rich man and Lazerous. When Lazerous was alive he had no rest, begging at the gate, and now the rich man is in torment and wants just a dip of water on his tongue to rest from the torment.

God has always given people a second chance, rest from their work, and rest from their bondage. It is at the heart of our Creator, this great mercy. how well do we live this concept out in our daily lives. Do we press an issue with a person, are we unyielding, do we not show mercy to relieve someone in need. Blessed is the Father who shows mercy to us and gives us rest. It's been his sign with us since the beginning. Even the land gets a rest, your animals, your debt, your inheritance, slaves, brothers, Everyone gets a break.

His commandments are a rest. A rest from wickedness, a rest from strife, a rest from hate and anger. When Pharoah thought he would lose his slaves he did the opposite of God he increased their work, he showed no mercy. He neither accepted God's Sabbath to rest himself and didn't give rest to others, the exact opposite of God. One of the big themes of this parasha is not opressing your brothers, not following or trusting in men, and being released from bondage. Lets think on these things this week as we study such things and apply these measures to our judgment to all those around us so we may be like our Father, merciful a taker(personally) and giver of rest and mercy. Shalom!
