Passover Weekly Sabbath Parasha Thoughts, Studies, and Comments
Reply Quote

The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

New Life

For Passover Parasha

By Ross Quintana 4-15-2006

This Parasha covers the the conversation of Moshe(Moses) with YHWH(the Lord) about how he will know if he is pleasing Elohim(God), it also covers Moshe seeing his pressence, the regiving of the two tables of stone, the covenant promise, entering into the land promise and commandments, the firstfruits, and the dry bones story of Ezekiel.

Exo 33:13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

Interesting he says show me "Thy way"

Joh 14:6 Yahushua(Jesus) saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Then he goes onto say that I may know thee

Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work lawlessness.

He essentially is saying show me your spirit, so that I may be joined to it, or show me your son that I may be joined to him. When two become one as in the model of husband and wife new life is created. This paints a beautiful picture of our new life in Messiah.

Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Exo 34:9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our lawlessness and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

Exo 33:16 For how shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

Here a sign of grace is that God is among them. relate this to this verse

Mat 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Moshe asked to see the glory of God:

Exo 33:18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

Luk 2:26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen YHWH's Mashiach.

Luk 2:27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Yahushua, to do for him after the custom of the law,

Luk 2:28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed Elohim, and said,

Luk 2:29 YHWH, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

Luk 2:30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

Luk 2:31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

Luk 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Yisrael.

So Moshe asked to see "the Way", wanted to know God, and wanted to see his glory. All apear to be pointing to Messiah. He then gave the second set of Commandments on the two tables of Stone. The first time the law was given it was broken so he gave it a second time, written on new tables. Interesting how we recieved the written Torah at Sinai and yet we brake them, and his son comes and teaches them them the spirit of Torah that they would keep it. He also comes a second time to write the law on our inward parts. We are told to write it on the tables of our heart. So was our hard heart of stone the first set of commandments he gave which he said we broke because we didn't have the right spirit yet.

Exo 34:1 And YHWH said unto Moshe, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.

Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

but then put's the same law a second time on our inward parts or in our hearts(Spirit), thus establishing us in both flesh and spirit. This results in him dwelling with us. The very thing Moshe asked for as a sign of Grace. Rebbelion and sin is opposite this sign of grace:

Exo 34:9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our lawlessness and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

Here going among us and him taking us for his inheritance is the same, and the opposite of this is rebellion and sin that needs to be pardoned so we may draw close and have newness of life. This leads to the last point the dry bones. It is modelled by two things, first is the desolate cities being filled with life (men). Then he asks if these dry bones can live:

Eze 37:3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O YHWH Elohim, thou knowest.

Eze 37:5 Thus saith YHWH Elohim unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:

Breath or Ruach is another term for spirit in hebrew. So he is saying he will put the spirit into them, and it will cause new life. This spirit is the spirit of Elohim which is the Spirit of Torah.

Eze 37:14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I YHWH have spoken it, and performed it, saith YHWH.

Let's seek after the same thing Moshe did, to know Yahushua our Messiah, and to seek after the Spirit of Torah so that we may know we have the Grace of God and that we may have newness of life and that God may dwell among us. Shalom!

“Grace”?

By Bruno French

Special Pesach Reading

Torah: Shemot/Exo. 33:12-34:26, B'midbar/Num. 28:19-25,

Haftarah: Yechezkel/Ezek. 36:37-37:14

Shalom my brothers and sisters. This week we had a special parasha reading due

to Pesach and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. There are many important thoughts within

this parasha and I would like to touch on just a few today. Of course I always like to start

out with my disclosure: all that I will be speaking on today is part of my studies and is

based on my opinion. I encourage and challenge all of you to test what I am saying by

the word and also to do your own study so that it can be established in your lives. You

are the one who will stand before our Father and account for the words he has given you.

Moving on. First I would like to remind you that the beginning of this parasha

takes place after the people had sinned against our Father by making the golden calf.

This takes place as Moshe is on the mount pleading with YHWH on the people’s behalf.

One of the first points I would like to touch on is the word GRACE. What is grace? We

have been given ideas of what grace is. We have heard many explanations of grace and

mercy but what does it truly mean? Well in the Hebrew, grace is simply:

H2580

chen

khane

From H2603; graciousness, that is, subjectively (kindness, favor) or objectively (beauty):

- favour, grace (-ious), pleasant, precious, [well-] favoured.

So we see that grace is simply kindness, or favor. Moshe we see was asking the

Father for kindness and favor in Shemot (Exo.) 33:13-17. Let us plug in the meaning of

the word and see how we read it.

“Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, shew me now thy way,

that I may know thee, that I may find favor in thy sight: and consider that this nation is

thy people. And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he

said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it

be known here that I and thy people have found favor in thy sight? is it not in that thou

goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are

upon the face of the earth. And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that

thou hast spoken: for thou hast found favor in my sight, and I know thee by name.”

- Shemot (Exo.) 33:13-17

Grace can kind of seem like an ambiguous word, but if we plug in the meaning we

can see what is truly being said. In my studies I have also found this passage to be a bit

hard to understand at first but if you do the study on the words you might find it reading

something like this:

“Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy way,

that I may know thee, that I may find favor in thy sight: and consider that this nation is

thy people. And he (YHWH) said, My presence shall go, and I will give thee rest.

And he (Moshe) said unto him, whether you decide to go or not, ascend not up out of

here. (which implies a longing for the Father to stay) For how shall it be known here if I

and thy people have found favor in thy sight? Is it not in that thou goes with us? Put a

difference between I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the

earth. And the YHWH said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for

thou has found favor in my sight, and I know thee by name.”

Now mind you, this is only my interpretation on what this is saying here.

There were two items that I underlined here, what were they and why did I

underline them? What do you think they mean? Study these things out. They are a

beautiful picture of our Messiah. So we see that grace is equal to favor. So how can we

find favor in our Fathers eyes the way Moshe found favor, and should we long to have

that kind of favor? Thoughts? Could it be that Moshe did as the Father commanded

him? Is there more than just the following of the letter?

In the beginning, way back in Genesis we see the father establishing two

witnesses; he created the heavens and the earth. Spirit and flesh? We all know that we

are made of flesh, but we all know that flesh will not inherit the kingdom. So what is

going on here? We see the word of god progressing from the start of the world and sin to

the new heavens and new earth without sin. I believe that our loving Father has set up a

system for us to follow. A progression from sinful flesh to a righteous spirit. I would

like to here a couple of your testimonies, how the Father took you from sin to life and

where are you going? What do you think you need to improve on? Let’s limit it to only

a few minutes.

Well, we see that the Father has given us his words, his commands. We see in this

parasha Moshe’ pleading for the people and we see the Father saying: (excerpt from

previous message)

“And YHWH passed by before him, and proclaimed, YHWH, YHWH Elohim, merciful

and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for

thousands, forgiving lawlessness and transgression and sin, and that will by no means

clear the guilty; visiting the lawlessness of the fathers upon the children, and upon the

children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

- Shemot (Exo.) 34:6-7

Some would interpret this as the fullness of his name. I lean a little different. I

believe this is a description of who he is and what he did for the children of Israel who

repented of the sin of the golden calf, and turned back to him. He proclaimed (this is

kind of like the sentencing in court when the judge reads what the outcome is)- do your

own study on the name YHWH in the original palio Hebrew text and the meanings, it is

quite a beautiful picture

“YHWH, YHWH,Elohim, compassionate and gracious, longsuffering or patient, and

abundant in kindness and stability or truth.”

And, he goes on to the outcome…

“Guarding (or keeping) kindness (or mercy) for thousands, lifting, bearing, or carrying

perversity or moral evil (also lawlessness) and rebellion (or trespass) and offence

(including the penalty), that will by no means make you clean; visiting the perversity or

moral evil (also lawlessness) of the fathers upon the sons, and the son’s son’s, unto the

third and fourth generation.”

This, I believe is a statement of who the Father is and that he is willing to lift, bear

or carry there sins of the trespass and the penalty of that sin, testing them to see if they

would do it again. But he reminds them that this does not clean them. They need to be

sanctified through the obeying of his word. We see the Father saying that he will do

mighty works through the people and he sets up a covenant with them in Shemot (Exo.)

34: 9-10.

His covenant is commandments for his children to do. Not to punish them, but so

that they can grow spiritually and change their hearts from that of stone to a moldable

heart of one that can find favor in the Fathers eyes. His eyes are always on us. He looks

to see if we love him enough to do the words he commands and to measure us in the

amount of love we have. This is the only way we will grow and produce wonderful fruit

for our Father. Ask yourself, how much do you love Him? Do you love yourself more,

or your family more?

Brothers and sisters, I implore you, to love our Father, and to love one another.

On this all the law and the prophets hang. Let us strive to find favor in our Fathers eyes.

I will leave you with this thought. In Shemot (Exo.) 34:27-28 we see the Father gives ten

commands which are the covenant that he sets with the people. Read these and ask

yourselves if Israel kept them. Could you keep them?

“Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither

thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee. But ye shall destroy their altars,

break their images, and cut down their groves: For thou shalt worship no other god: for

YHWH, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the

inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their

gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; and thou take of their daughters unto

thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a

whoring after their gods. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.”

“The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened

bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou

camest out from Egypt.”

“All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or

sheep, that is male. But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou

redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt

redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.”

“Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in

harvest thou shalt rest.”

“And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the

feast of ingathering at the year's end.”

“Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord YHWH, the God

of Israel. For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall

any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before YHWH thy God thrice

in the year.”

“Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of

the feast of the Passover be left unto the morning.”

“The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of YHWH thy

God.”

“Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

Shalom, and may your week be blessed.
