Nasso Parasha Thoughts, Studies, and Comments
Reply Quote
The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Made Right

For Parasha Nasso

By Lovingneighbor 6-3-2006

In this weeks parasha we see Moshe taking the sum of the sons of Gershom able to serve in the tabernacle, the sum of Merari, and the sons of Kehati,The duties of Gershom are the coverings of the tabernacle and woven items, Merari is in charge of the boards and structure. We see the number of Levi to minister, the command for lepers, those with issues, and those defiled with the dead to be put outside the camp.We see the laws for trespasses, laws of jealousy, Laws of the Natzari vow,Aharonic blessing, and Altar dedication by the 12 princes over the 12 days. The Haftarah is about Shimshon and the promise of his birth to Manoach's wife.

In this weeks Parasha we have the Children of the priesthood counted who will serve YHWH. Notice the difference of last weeks counting which is first the men of war, then the men of service. The children and the priests. It seems to remind me of the parable of the prodigal son when he said if I can just be a sevant in my father's house. He was a son but would even desire to be a servant of his fathers. Some times it's easy to get hughty about our knowledge of God. Yet by sinning we forsake the great place we have with our Father. But even a servant has rules. As a matter of fact a sevant must focus on serving even with no thought of reward or inheritance. This seems to the process that starts with the prodigal son by confessing his sin.

Luk 15:17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

Luk 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

Luk 15:19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

Confession of sins is the first step of the healing process. We see in this weeks parasha a command to confess our sins.

Num 5:6 Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty;

Num 5:7 Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him against whom he hath trespassed.

Num 5:8 But if the man have no kinsman to recompense the trespass unto, let the trespass be recompensed unto the LORD, even to the priest; beside the ram of the atonement, whereby an atonement shall be made for him.

Those defiled shall not draw near to YHWH until they are made clean. Messiah aludes to this in his statement:Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Mat 5:23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

Mat 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

Mat 5:25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Mat 5:26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

The same was for these cast out of the camp, they could not approach YHWH until they were made clean. This ties into the law of tresspassing. Where it states when you must recompense plus 20% to whom you have wronged. They must go through the process of making it right both to the person they wronged and to God.

Next is the laws of Jealousy where they have wronged their husband and lied about it. If they will not confess not only will God reveal their sin but it will be a curse to them if He does. How does this tie into the Natzari? it's all apart of being set apart to God. All of Israel are to be Holy. The foundation of this is to recognize God as your master, learn his ways and do them. If you break his commandments, he will give you a way to make it right but you must do it in the prescribed manner and humble yourself. We see this described by Yahushua in this parable.

Luk 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

Luk 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

Luk 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

Luk 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Luk 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

We must pay whatever we owe and add to it in the process to show fruit of our repentance. This is the whole outline of dwelling with and interacting with God. Shalom!

Dedication
For Parasha Nasso
By Lovingneighbor 5-25-2007

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Bamidbar also called Numbers, and is called Nasso which means 'Make an Accounting'. In this weeks parasha:

- Elohim Commands Moshe to count all of the sons of Gershom, Merari, Kehai, and Levi who are able to serve in the tabernacle
- Gershom is put in charge of the tabernacle coverings
- Merari is put in charge of the boards and the framework of the tabernacle
- All the people with leperosy, issues, and those defiled by the dead are sent outside the camp
- The law of tresspasses is given
- The laws of Jealousy are given
- The law of the Natzari vow is given
- The Aharonic blessing is given
- The Altar is dedicated by the 12 princes over 12 days
- Haftarah talks about the promise of Shimson

In this weeks parasha we see a common theme underlying the main points and that is the concept of dedication. Chanak H2596
H2596
חנך
chânak
khaw-nak'
A primitive root; properly to narrow (compare H2614); figuratively to initiate or discipline: - dedicate, train up.

The ancient hebrew pictographs is divide sons tame. It is no wonder the use of this word is in the proverbs

Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The word train up are the Hebrew Chanoch. This is also the name for Enoch meaning dedicated. In this weeks parasha we have an accounting of the priests. Moshe is commanded to gather the heads or first of Gershom which means stranger. They are given their duties of the tabernacle service. We can see the Levi'im are being trained as the children of proverbs 22:6 in what they should do. These trainings which is the same word for dedication are also tied to the Levi'im because they are the dedicated ones who replaced the dedicated firstborn of Yisra'el. So they are both dedicated and being trained up in this portion. Then we get the law of the tresspass. And the concept of returning 20% additional to the principal and repaying it to whom he has wronged and if they have no one to repay it to they may repay it to YHWH and the priests. They have gone astray they were not dedicated to keeping YHWH's ways and went away from their dedication and now must repay. The people they repay are the ones dedicated to obeying Elohim, whether it's the principal or the priests. They benefit from the training of the the ones who fall away. They by remaining dedicated to YHWH are training the others how to be and receive their wages for righteousness and the blessing for staying dedicated to YHWH.

Next we get to the Laws of Jealousy which also talk about the concept of remaining dedicated to your husband. The word for tresspass is mah'al which in the ancient Hebrew is Mem Ayin, lamed. Which can mean water or womb, sees, teaching. The tresspass is not hidden and all inside the womb which appear to be unseen are fully seen by YHWH. This ties into the law of the tresspass and the law of the Jealous husband who has no witness but feels something is wrong. He may go to YHWH and YHWH will reveal if there has been a tresspass. If the wife did not remain dedicated to YHWH and to her husband she will be cursed and if she did remain dedicated she will be blessed. The pattern repeats. It continues in the natzari vow where one must remain dedicated to YHWH for a period of time for a vow and will be not permitted to drink wine whch represents teachings until his vow is fulfilled. If he does not stay dedicated to his vow he must start over. At the end he is able to drink wine and I beleive this is the teaching he received for dedicating himself to YHWH for a period of time. It is about discipline which is one of the meanings of Chanak. There is reward for dedicationand they are displayed in the Aharonic blessing where YHWH will bless you, keep you, make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. His face is likened to judgement and when he looks upon his firstborn, his dedicated ones he will be gracious and Lift up or Nawsah where we get the term Nasso his facee upon them and give them peace.
This leads to the final part the dedication of the altar. The setting apart of the table of YHWH, the dedicating of what you offer to YHWH, the dedicating and training of what is acceptable. All is judged by the altar and yet all is not accepted. As with Kayin and Hevel if what you offer is good will it not be accepted. We all must remain dedicated to YHWH and our dedication will be counted, weighed and repayed whether good or evil and YHWH's face or judgment shall see and teach us all, may it be gracious to us and may we receive peace. Shalom

Under the Light
For Parasha Nasso

This weeks parasha we see all the talk about the counting of the priests and their duties and places around the tabernacle. We seewhat happens to people with leperosy and the laws of jealousy and the dedication of the altar. What I find so interesting in this weeks parasha is that just like the whole Torah we are given instruction and there is going to come a day when we are measured and accounted for how we did according to the instruction.

Now this hits home this week as this week in my business I was audited by the EPA for lead based paint as I am a Realtor. They went back to 2006 and were going to check all of my paperwork to see if I had been doing what I was intructed to. Handing out the papers and getting disclosures signed. The thought of an audit sends fear into your heart. Even before you know if you have done anything wrong, you still fear because it is about things you did in the past and there is no going back. You think to yourself I hope I did it. It didn't matter a few minutes before you heard you were going to be audited but now your heart is beating. You go back and review all your paperwork taking inventory of where you followed the instruction and looking for points that you may get caught on.

Then you find an error. Oh you didn't get a signature, or thy didn't check mark this or that. Why, why didn't I have a check mark, did I forget and just plain break the law or is it missing. I can't remember. how much easier would it have been to just make sure back then every time, now I am scrambling and I don't know if I am just guilty or if I lost it. There is nothing I can do. The light is shined on me and I cannot hide I do not have the paper I need. The sinnful side comes out and you think I can just put a checkmark there no one will know. Then your heart is heavy and the commandment to not bear false witness beats on your heart. You try and justify it saying it's no big deal, and no one will know and no one cares. Can you score a 100% when you aren't 100%?

It reminds me of a verse the Mashiach said:

Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For every one that does evil hateth the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Joh 3:21 But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in Elohim

The righteous who are 100% come to the audit because they will be commended for their 100%. They are not in fear because they have not done wrong. The wicked either run from the audit or if they cannot then try and lie and conceal because their deeds are not 100% and the lie would be if they received a pat on the back. They diminish 100% if they are not caught because there is value in the 100%. The 100% is Mashiach and those who lie and tell themselves we are righteous because Mashiach is righteous are liars. They diminish his righteousness. They will not stand in the judgement.

This applies to the person who touched the ark. It says in :

Num 4:15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.

The death of the one who touched it seemed harsh but it wasn't just because he touched the ark. He had been told not to touch it or he would die and he did it anyway. There are costs for disobediance. What I learned this week is that the fear and scramble of going back and having the light shone on your past and your sins is not a fun or comfortable feeling. Especially when there is nothing you can do now to erase it. The only thing you can do is stop adding things you can't undo. Realize ever action will be looked at and when you have a rule don't get lazy with it. The light will make you squirm and there is no way to run. Like the woman who drinks the water to see if she has cheated doesn't matter if there were no witnesses to testify against her, she may have hidden it well, but she cannot ide it from Elohim. Hiding only works on the outside, but the sin as the scripture says remains. We can deceive each other but not Elohim.

I challenge you all to do what is right every time, because the light only makes you squirm on the things you have done wrong. The audit and accoutning will point out where you have not done according to the word and your good deeds as it says can be forgotten for the bad. I bless YHWH for the audit that has taught me such a valuable lesson and how much more in the day of our visitation. The light of the world will return and our deeds will no longer be hidden. All will be under the light and we pray for mercy and we must stop adding to our sins. Shalom!
