The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.

With God
For Parasha Shelach
By Lovingneighbor 6-17-2006
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Numbers also called Bamidbar, and is called Shelach which means 'Send Thou'. In this weeks parasha:
- 12 Spies sent to see the promised land
- 10 Spies give evil report to Moshe and people
- People Murmer against God (Elohim)
- Moshe prays God won't destroy them
- God makes them wander for 40 years all that murmered died in the wilderness except their children, Kalev (Caleb), and Yahushua (Joshua) sun of Nun
- People try to go into the promised land without God and they are destroyed
- Offering for when you come into the promised land
- Law of sins of ignorance
- Tzi Tzi commandment
- Haftarah Rachav helps 2 spies and her family is spared
This weeks Parasha has the children of Israel being sent into the land to spy it out. Now why do you think God wanted to send them there to spy out the land. if he was going to give it to them wouldn't he have just brought them in. I think he is testing them. This seems to model the final testing of the Millenium where satan is unbound to test the children who recieved the law and were tested on it in the wilderness. No wonder they see giants considering the Anakim and Nephilim are decendants of those fallen angels who slept with the daughters of man.
Israel finds themselves in some ways facing Pharoah and his armies a second time. The first time they were afraid:
Exo 14:10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Yisra'el cried out unto YHWH (the Lord).
Exo 14:11 And they said unto Moshe, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?
Exo 14:12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
Exo 14:13 And Moshe said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of YHWH, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
And the second time even after the receiveing of the law and training in it, they still were afraid of the one whom they many times desired to return to:
Num 14:2 And all the children of Yisra'el murmured against Moshe (Moses) and against Aharon (Aaron): and the whole congregation said unto them, Would Elohim that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would Elohim we had died in this wilderness!
Num 14:3 And wherefore hath YHWH brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
Num 14:4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
It's the same story from before. An in many senses as Messiah said the tares would be with the wheat until the end. They had fear but not for God, they feared the ruler of this world (Pharoah/Satan) who had been defeated and cast down by God. They couldn't see that God was greater than the ruler of this world and that the spirit ruled over even the mightiest of flesh.
The murmerers provoked God with their disbelief. We see this again with Messiah when surrounded by Pharisees and bible students and they were in disbelief with all their knowledge and yet when some children wanted to draw near to Messiah hid disciples forbid them. Messiah replies:
Mat 19:13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
Mat 19:14 But Yahushua said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
In this same way the adults who murmered and doubted God were not allowed to enter the kingdom, but their children were. This is an important thought to focus on. Sometime as the scripture says:
1Co 8:1 Knowledge puffeth up, but love edifieth.
It has been the same problem since the beginning. Satan was cast down and the humble were lifted up.
Eze 17:24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I YHWH have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I YHWH have spoken and have done it.
The people feared Pharoah and not God, they trusted in themselves to go against the giants but not God, they continued to put their trust everywhere but in God and the result of that was death. Even Rachav a stranger recognized God was to be feared and it saved her whole family.
Jos 2:10 For we have heard how YHWH dried up the water of the Sea of Suf for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amori, that were on the other side Yarden, Sichon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
Jos 2:11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for YHWH your Elohim, he is Elohim in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
There is quite simply two goals Israel had to accomplish in coming out of Egypt and going into the promised land and the Kingdom of Elohim:
Ecc 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear Elohim, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
They had one but lacked the other. At different times they seemed to have one or the other but they were never established in both and so they were destroyed. Let's all be established in knowing who God is and fearing him in all we do, and keeping his precious commandments. It's not enough to just take his name, but then if we do we must live according to his word so that our word and deed would be with God. Shalom!
Mat 19:26 But Yahushua beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with Elohim all things are possible.
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.

- The men who brought back the evil report died by a plague
- The people mourned and then wanted to go in and Moshe warned them not to
- The people went and were destroyed by the Ameleki and Kena'ani
- The minkha and the drink offering of the lamb is taught
- The minkha and the drink offering of the ram is taught
- The minkha and the drink offering of the bullock is taught
- One law shall be for you and the stranger who sojourns with you
- When you come into the land you shall offer a heave offering of the first dough
- The offering of the sins of ignorance for the congregation is taught
- The offering of the person who sins through ignorance is taught
- The soul who sins presumptuously shall be cut off from his people
- The children of Yisra'el found a man gathering wood on the sabbath and they stoned him
- The command to make and wear tzi tzis is given
- Haftarah - Rachav saves the 2 spies sent to spy out the land and her whole family is spared
in this weeks Parasha we have a concept that ties together all the points. This concept is nestled in the very name of the parasha. Shelach H7971 is a root word spelled Shin, Lamed, Chet in the Paleo hebrew or Ancient Hebrew pictographs is would be press, teach, outside or divide. To press teachings outside to me sounds like a teacher. They are ones who push teachings to others. The words meaning is to send or be sent. The meanings of Shelach are: A primitive root; to send away, for, or out (in a great variety of applications): - X any wise, appoint, bring (on the way), cast (away, out), conduct, X earnestly, forsake, give (up), grow long, lay, leave, let depart (down, go, loose), push away, put (away, forth, in, out), reach forth, send (away, forth, out), set, shoot (forth, out), sow, spread, stretch forth (out).
Interesting the use to sow or spread, this reminds me of the parable of the sower who is spreading the word of Elohim. Also the pool of Shiloam the sent one, or Shiloh who is sent. Most of these can be applied to Messiah of course he was the greatest teacher.
So lets look at the first use of this word in Gen 3:22 where YHWH says Now lest he put forth(shelach) his hand and take also of the tree of life. Next, Adam is sent out of the garden, then the raven and dove are sent forth out of the ark with Noach. Next pharoah send Abram away, then the angels sent forth their hand to grab Lot, and then they are sent by YHWH to destoy Sodom. The pattern isn the scripture is those who are sent in a positive note or those who are sent away or cast out. Which in itself is a form of teaching. Just as Adam wes sent out the goal then is to return having learned. This fundamental principle is that a teacher is sent and yet the one who does wrong is cast out and must become a student to return, they must learn to return.
So what does this have to do with teachers. We the Spies or rulers of the 12 tribes are sent out and were to return with fruit from their journey. They brought back not just the fruit of the land but something else, a evil report. They went away as rulers of the people and came back false teachers. They were sent to do a mission and instead came back and started teaching falsehood mixed with truth. Yes the land is good, but their are giants there who are too strong. They took the information and started misinterpreting it against the original meaning they went their for. Elohim commanded them to spie out the land and that they were going to go in and possess it. But the spies took the information and misinterpreted it and led the people ultimatley to their death for believeing the false report. These false teachers used their position over the peole to sway them to their own thoughts that didn't line up with the plan of Elohim. They ended up dying of a plague and the people would be sent to wander in the wilderness until they die. What was the sin of the people. Was it not that they belived in men rather than Elohim, they believed in men chosen originally by Elohim but then that used this opportunity to rule over the people for their own purposes. The opposite of wandering is to be lead to your destination. The difference of following false teachers and following Elohim is the false teachers will cause you to wander until you die. They never bring you to the plan of Elohim. They said let us make captains over us, who do you think that would be? Maybe the rulers over them who taught them these things. A false teacher speaks his own words:
Joh 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
The Spies were like the firstfruits, shooting forth, going to the promised land first. Like teachers seeing the things of Elohim before the rest of the people and yet 10 out of 12 who are shown the things of Elohim end up being false teachers. Only 2 out of the 12 had the right spirit and were able to tell the people the right things even if it seemed scary. Just like th prophets who tell people things they don't want to hear, it's always better for the people than to not listen. The punishment is always worse. This has alot to do with the tzi tzit that we will learn about as blossoms. The commandments and yeilding to Elohim are an opening of the hand and a thing of beauty. The blossom bears fruit and the open hand is tamed. YHWH wanted to destroy the nation because they murmered after listening to the false report. They would not listen to the true teachers who were sent, but followed after lies. Teachers who would be pu to death and that bring down their followers to the grave with them. They are the snare. The False teachers were taken away and the parents who would also be false teachers to their children were taken away and the children were the ones who after learning what happened to their parents would have the chance to enter in. Notice tha pattern of chosen by Elohim then destroyed, then the parents of the children, chosen by Elohim as teachers then taken away. To be chosen b Elohim is a great responsibilty and like the prophet who was misled by one who was a prophet of Elohim, people always have to realize being chosen and exalted brings temtation and the people who were chosen by Elohim one moment may go astray another.
The danger is not keeping your eye on Elohim and transferring you following of Elohim to following men. This is what I see wrong with the rabbi system in Judaism. They figure from one generation to another nothing has changed. A jewish man told me that since sinai to Rashi nothing changed and it was therefore not reasonable to question Rashi's interpretations. This happens in Christianity also I always hear people bragging about their pastor or saying things like I go to church to hear the word. Yet it is not the word usually but the teachings of men who they hear. They like the children of Yisra'el have attached themselves to a sinking ship that will bring them to their graves.
After this the people thought they could go in and take the land. Funny the rebellious people who followed false teachers thought they could take the promised land for themselves. Sound like anything? Religion has thought it has claim to the promised land whether Christianity or Judaism, yet the reject the truth and the teachers of Elohim, Christianity thinks anyone including themselves can lead them into the promised land. Pastors, friends, or themselves if they think they understand the bible enough, Judaism likes the teachings of men too much. They delight in their own chosen leaders who many times teach falsehood or misinterpret the truth and thus lead others astray. Everyone wants to lean on others interpretations instead of connecting to Elohim's word directly. There is no one between you and Messiah, yet prople are lazy and want to eat from another man's plate, a plate filled with lies and misunderstandings.
What does the Minkha and drink offering have to do with teachings and the word of Elohim. Every life offered up to Elohim has a coresponding grain and drink offering. They are like heaven and earth each life that comes before Elohim is accompanied by the brea(earthly) and wine(heavenly) witnesses and then the blood is spilled or revealed that is inside the flesh. Everyone has two witnesses and at their death and judgment they will bear witness to their spirit before Elohim. The souls who sins ignorantly shall still pay and the one who sins with the high hand or high worship shall be cut off. The exalted who lift uptheir hand and sinaka the teachers will be cut off. It is like th amn gathering trees on the sabbath. Som versions say sticks but the word is trees. As we read in other spots it compares men to trees. He I believe is a man who gathers followers on the sabbath. Instead of doing Elohim's will on the sabbath he was starting his own ministry. I see this all the time as pastors and rabbi's who were supposed to create students of Elohim start making students of themselves. Teaching conformity not searching for the truth. If a student questions the teacher they are corrected not praised. This is what happened to Messiah in my opinion He came correcting the teachers and they didn't like it because they wanted followers. These men are likened to men gathering trees on the sabbath. Their teachings and evil report sway the people to follw their ideas and them and not Elohim.
What does this have to do with the tzi tzit, well, the tzi tzit when described don't talk about the knots or other threads only the thread of blue. This thread represents the spirit of the commandments. This is what we are to remember and funny they call this thread the servant thread shamash when i is the only ruler and all other threads are servant to it. As John said servant of Yahushua, I must decrease so he may increase. So we see only the blue thread talked about because the spirit of the commandments is the focus not the servants who will bring the message. Five servants on the right and one thread of blue as those five are about loving Elohim with all your heart, soul, and strength. same with the one on the left. We get caught up in the servant and not the message. False teachers boast and draw attention to their wisdom and teachings and followers and yet they are nothing without the spirit of the message. They are like this flesh without the blood or thread of blue. Death and vanity and all those caught in their knot or snare will die with them. Let's look past the five white threads and the servant of YHWH and if we are going to glory and give honor, lets give glory and honor to YHWH. Shalom!
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.

- The command to make and wear tzi tzis is given
- Haftarah - Rachav saves the 2 spies sent to spy out the land and her whole family is spared
This weeks parasha has some intersting points that almost seem unrelated. They are the princes going to the land to bring report, The law of the minkha and drink offerings, and the law of the Tzitziot, and the haftarah story of Rachav.
The name of the Parasha is Shelach which is spelled Shin, Lamed, Chet, which in the ancient Hebrew can mean test, teaching, of the border. Lets start this with the word Shelach and we see that this word is use first in the story of Adam when Elohim says he wil send his hand out lest he take from the Tree of Life and He sends him out of the garden to work the ground from which he came.
This has multiple potential meanings. The one I see is that that ground is his flesh as it says that he came from. He was to go and work the ground. He was sent ou to test the borders or the outside. As Mashiach eludes to this outside is the flesh and the inside is the spirit. The life is in the blood as the Torah says it resembles the wine which is inside the cup. So this is an inside vs. outside situation. Before Adam takes of the tree of life which I believe is Mashiach. He must first be sent out to search the land or his flesh and work it making it fruitful.
Ecc 1:13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail has Elohim given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
So this leads us to the next part which is the next use of this word Shelach is about the raven and dove Noach sent out. The raven went to and fro until the waters were dried up, this models Cain who also went to and fro in the earth. The until the waters were dried up maked me think of the tribulation and until things are dry and the word of Elohim is lacking in the world. This is the time designated for the raven or evil one to be going to and fro. This time will end by Mashiach returning. This is modelled by the Dove and the Holy Spirit finding rest in the land. This rest is hebrew word manoach H4494 which can also mean home. The Dove (Holy Spirit) had found no place to rest or make a home. When it does the ark will rest which is a double meaning, the ark which carried all life and the ark of Elohim which carries the commandments which is the salvation of all life.
This takes us to the next key word in the beginning of this parasha and that is the word toor H8446 In:
Num 13:2 SendH7971 you men,H376 that they may searchH8446 (H853) the landH776 of Kena'an,H3667 whichH834 IH589 giveH5414 unto the childrenH1121 of Yisra'el:H3478 of every tribeH4294 of their fathersH1 shall you sendH7971 aH259 man,H376 every oneH3605 a rulerH5387 among them.
It says Shelach, eesh (men), that they may search (toor) the land. The first use of this word to search out was in last weeks parasha in:
Num 10:33 And they departed from the mount of YHWH three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of YHWH went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.
The ark went before them to search out (toor) a resting place (Manoach) for them. This is where all the stories come together. The word Shelach seems to imply sending out and compared to toor which is to look at and contemplate or search out. Now what were they looking for back with Noach. The Dove (Holy Spirit) was looking for a place to rest it's foot. This word resting place was also home. So we have a place to rest your feet equal with the home you are searching for. Feet in the ramez are equal to the letter of the law or commandments of the flesh. Your walk is how you physically live according or contrary to the commandments. When the Dove found a place to rest in the earth ( spirit of Elohim resting in the flesh of men. It brought back a olive branch. The olive branch represents Yisra'el which is brought back to the ark and Moshe which represent the commandments. So to summarize in that story when the Holy Spirit or the spirit of the commandments rested in men Yisra'el was regathered to Torah. Lets look further.
Deu 1:33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in a cloud by day.
The Shekinah which seems to me to be also the cloud or spirit of YHWH goes out to search out a place for you to rest your feet. This could be understood that it it teaching you to rest your works and become spiritual. This is the hands (earthly) vs. hands (spiritual). The law then teaches us to be spiritual not fleshly. Paul pounds this point home all through his writings the flesh is death, the spirit is life.
So he sends the princes of Yisra'el to search out the land like he did with Adam. He will have no home until he searches out his flesh and overcomes it. Like Mashiach said
Mat 8:20 And Yahushua saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
His resting place was not in the flesh I beleive it was in the garden which is spiritual and on the inside. So he sends out the princes to search out the promised land. Who was there. Giants. Giants of what. Where they spiritual giants or were the men only looking outside. These were the sont of anak who went into the daughters of men. They were lessened. They came down. They are more flesh in my opinion than spirit. So the fear of those who only see things fleshly was upon them. But if they disobeyed Elohim how do we know people like David didn't have a larger spirit then Goliath. It just depends where you put your stock. In my opinion these are cast down people who have chosen the earth instead of the spirit. They tasted the spiritual world and have chosen to be fallen and earthly. They have chosen to be giants of the flesh when we should choose to be grasshoppers in the flesh and great in the spirit. They are to be cast out of the good land that Elohim has promised. We are trading our place in the wilderness, our place outside the camp and the kingdom for the place that they once had. The promised land of Elohim. Who will not give up their flesh for a home for their spirit. This I believe is what it means by a resting place for your feet. It may mean death of the flesh but not of the spirit. It is a return Home. Give to ceasar what is Ceasars and to Elohim what is Elohim's. Leave the flesh to those who are giants of the flesh and go in a possess that good land promised to you and your fathers before you.
What does this have to do with the tzitziot?
Num 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of YHWH, and do them; and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to go a whoring:
Where it says that you seek not, that word is toor which is what the princes were doing. They were send to search out, and look upon the land. They were shelach meaning to test the teaching of the outside or border. The border of the promised land is the choice between the things of the flesh and the things of the spirit. Will you obey your own heart and eyes, the things you lust after or fear. Will you fear those who are great in the flesh or Him who is great in the spirit.
Psa 56:4 In Elohim I will praise His word, in Elohim I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
The test is simply made in every choice we make unto death which is the removing of all flesh. May it be that when we die we have moved all our treasures which is our choices in the spirit so that when we die we have not lost anything but been circumcised and lost the disease of the flesh leperosy, the dying flesh and been cured and allowed to re-enter the camp whole and without disease, rich in righteousness and life. Shalom
Eze 20:6 In the day that I lifted up my hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
