The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Shadows of Messiah

For Parasha Pinechas

By Lovingneighbor 7-15-2006

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Numbers also called Bamidbar, and is called Pinechas which means 'Mouth of Brass'. In this weeks parasha:

Covenant of Peace given to Pinechas

Command to vex and smite Midyan

Command to number the children of Yisra'el for war

Inheritance shall be given by lot and number

Bloodline of Moshe

Priests are numbered but not for war

Daughters of Tzelochad ask for their father's inheritance

Laws for passing an inheritance

Yahushua set over congregation

Continual offerings, and holy day offerings outlined

Haftarah Izevel threatens Eliyahu, he hides and messenger of God visits him twice with food and drink, Elisha appointed in his place

In the study of this weeks parasha it seemed there was a common thread that each of these items touched on. The millenium and Messiah. They seem to shadow the larger event of the return of Messiah and the millenium kingdom. Shadows have some interesting characteristics. In the scriptures, they seem to be a revelation of a true thing in heaven.

Heb 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

The concept of a shadow is simple to have a shadow you need first a source of light. Proverbs 6:23 shows us the light

Pro 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

Messiah also said he was the light(Law). So we start with a light which comes from heaven also known as the sun. It then hits the mediator between the light and the Earth where the shadow is seen. Who do you think the mediator is?

1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Yahushua the Messiah;

The shadow is then cast to the Earth for those to see. In seeing the shadow we see just the basics of the true thing that casts the shadow. We don't see all the details we just see the image or pattern of the true thing. So if the temple was the shadow of the true things in heaven, then even with all it's detail it is just a small image of the true thing and true temple in heaven that the light reveals all the details of. When we see the shadow we see the form and pattern but not all the details. But we cannot stand before the Father in his glory because it would reveal all our wickedness (our details). We therefore seek to dwell in the shadow of our Messiah who shields us from the heat of the sun(testing). As we seek out the shadow to learn about the pattern we draw closer in knowledge of the mediator and learn of the true thing that casts the shadow. Patterns in the scripture all mean things and should be studied. Many people think only literally and therefore live only in darkness believing that the shadow is the true thing itself. They think because they can see the shadow and can't see the true thing that is casting it that the true thing is made up or not real because they can't see it. It takes trust to know that there is a difference in what is earthly and what is heavenly. We must learn that the earthly things are made out of heavenly things and out of the mind of God. People many times think that spiritual things are nice to talk about, but are vague and not solid. but it is the things that we know that we must examine to know the true things and the true things are things we can't see or touch sometimes. Trusting in the unseen is most of what Yisra'el needed to learn through their whole life journey. Not taking the spiritual application serious in your studies is hiding in the darkness. Though it's scary and seems hard to know we need to consistently study the spirit of the Torah and how every thing in it applies to the true things they foreshadow. Hebrews states these shadows are not the true things but help us learn of those true things to come.

Heb 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

But some study the pattern and try and learn and see how it might apply to the true thing. For us this true thing is Messiah. We examine the scriptures to recognize the pattern that they cast and what does it tell us about Messiah. In this weeks parasha we see many patterns that point to Messiah. Let's examine them. I'll give a brief summary of them and what I see.

Covenant of Peace given to Pinechas, This covenant is said to be an everlasting priesthood. This sounds like Melckezidek which is a model of the priesthood of Messiah.

Heb 7:15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

Heb 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

Heb 7:17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

So Pinechas is given a everlasting priesthood and it was said because he did two things: He was zealous for God, and he made atonement for Yisra'el. This points to the character of Messiah who is the true Everlasting priest and who made the true atonement for Yisra'el. So that is the first shadow of Messiah, then they are commanded to smite Midyan which means strife because Kozbi which means deceit and lies entered into the camp of Yisra'el through Zimri which means praise worthy or musical. Interesting that the strife shall be smote from among Yisra'el by the man Pinechas(mouth of brass(which brass usually signifies judgment)) a zealous man speaking truth will smite strife and lies that were brought into the camp of the children of Yisra'el.

Next it talks about the inheritance of the land. This foreshadows the return of Yisra'el to the promised land.

Next we have the children being prepared to war, which is what I think the millenium is all about. Satan is bound for at the beginning of the millenium(much like the woman Kozbi(lies and deceit) being killed and the plague being stopped in the camp of Yisra'el) then the men counted for war against Midyan(strife) in the future. In the millenium we will be given a sword(the true word of God) from Messiah and trained up to do battle with Midyan between truth and lies. This is essentially what didn't happen with Eve. She accepted lies from the snake and this was I think Midyan entering into the camp.

Next the bloodline of Moshe is given and the priests numbered, this may be a shadow of the revealing of Messiah to his brothers as with Yosef.

Then we have the daughters of Tzelochad asking for their inheritance from their father and we see the laws given about who is allowed and inheritance and how it may be given. THis also seems to be a theme of the millenium as peoples from all parts of the word are brought together and given portions according to who they are. Many will not know clearly that they have an inheritance but while find out from YHWH as the daughters did that they shall also have an inheritance. I believe this refers to Isaiah 56 and the strangers who are joined to Yisra'el but may not have claim to an inheritance directly.

Then we have Yahushua being put in power over the people. This one is self explanatory. Interesting though that Yahushua was the one who didn't go astray in the wilderness(time of testing(in the flesh))

then we have all the offerings at all the holy days and the continual offering which all represent Messiah, he is our continual offering and his offering is present in each of the holy days as they all teach about an aspect of his role in our redemption.

Finally we have the Haftarah where Eliyahu is visited twice by a messenger of God who brings him bread and drink to strengthen him during his forty day testing period. This shadows the forty days of testing for Messiah who though he had no earthly bread and drink was sustained by spiritual bread(the word of God) and water or wine (holy spirit). It also foreshadows the two comings of Messiah(the Law) once at Sinai(the letter of the law), and second at Messiah's coming (the spirit of the Law).

All these things seem to shadow events leading to the millenium and return of our King. They are mere patterns but we examine them to try and know our Messiah and be prepared for the true things to come. Shalom!

For Parasha Pinchas
By Lovinneighbor 5-25-2007

- YHWH tells Moshe the see the promised land from mount Aviram then he shall die
- Moshe asked YHWH to set a man over Yisra'el to replace him
- YHWH told Moshe Yahushua shall replace him as leader of Yisra'el

- The law for the special offerings for Pesach and the Feast of Unleavened Bread are given
- The law of the special offerings of Shavuot are given

- The law of the special offerings of Yom Kippur are given
- The law of special offerings for Sukkot are given
- Haftarah - Eliyahu fled for his life and YHWH fed him and instrcted him to appoint 2 Kings and a prophet

This weeks portion covers many interesting things, but one of the ones I want to touch on is the concept of change. Changing has two forms. The outside change and the inside change. We are going to focus ont he inside change. We start this week with Pinchas thrusting through the Yisra'eli and the Midyanite woman. This action of zealousness stopped the plague that was among or within Yisra'el. What was this plague? It was whoredom and lies. The woman's name is Kozbi which means lies or deciet. She was a Midyanite which means strife. So we see that lies and whoredom were causing strife within Yisra'el between YHWH and Yisra'el. Pinchas means mouth of brass. Brass symbolizing judgement and th mouth being the divider or judge of what coms into the body or goes out. Pinchas seeing evil enter into the camp was zealous but the word is the root of the same word saying in num 25:11

Num 25:11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
The word zealous is the root of the word used later as jealous and is mostly translated as jealousy. I think the concept was that Pinchas was actually jealous for YHWH and because he acted in smaller fashion to stop the whoredom he helped Yisra'el as a whole avoid a much larger punishment. This pattern is all throughout the torah we would be much better to fight our own sin off then to have it purged through the wrath of YHWH.

This change within starts with cleansing the whoredom and deciet from within Yisra'el then it spreads beyond to actually smiting the Midyanim who are trying to enter into Yisra'el to destroy it. The next concept is the numbering of Yisra'el who have changed from their father's rebellion to the the righteousness of their children. From one generation to the next there has been changes in their spirit. They are not their fathers, but are better than their fathers. For this reason they shall be allowed in in my opinion.

It is the natural progression of the plan of Elohim in my opinion to grow and become full or complete, whether it is in righteousness or wickedness. These children will now enter the promised land. Their fathers saw it but would not possess it because they could not possess their spirit. They allowed it to be possessed by evil and rebellion and wickedness and so their eyes were closed. They could not advance beyond Yarden (judgement) and beyond just coming out of Egypt. This reminds me in many ways of those who only see the letter of the law and though the spirit of the law, the good land is there they cannot posses it. A child can sometimes see the spirit easier than an adult because they think they know everything and are puffed up with the pride of years. So the inheritance goes to those who can both see and posses and have dominion over the good land. The good land is the spiritual land and the the flesh is but an image of the spiritual.

What happens next exemplifies this in that Moshe who is symbolic of the letter of the law would take Yisra'el to the promised land jst as he did their fathers, but they would not go in and possess the inside. The spirit of the law. They were ruled by the wilderness or the flesh. But Yahushua was the man that Moshe asked for and talked about that should take the people inside. How can one miss the blatant model that Moshe would take you to Yahushua who would take you in so you may receive your inheritance. The letter as Paul says takes you to the teacher or Messiah and Messiah would teach you the spirit of the Law wherein there is life. It's tough not to see that the pharisees who followed Moshe would not follow Yahushua who would place his hand or commandments on Yahushua and Yahushua would take the people inside the promised land which is your spirit.

Finally we have the offerings for each of the set apart times. This also was the ones that would point you to the real sacrifice of Yahushua and how he fulfilled each of these roles in the holy days. He continually atoned day and night for the people, he was the passover lamb, He caused Yisra'el to feast on the unleavened truth in the wilderness. He was offered up as firstfruits to YHWH, He then prepared over 7 sabbaths his firstfruits of both the loaves or both houses to present them to YHWH. He awoke Yisra'el on yom Teruah, He brought atonement and repentance to all Yisra'el, and He will dwell among the second harvest and He will cause us to have great Joy in his Torah on the last great day. The plan of Moshe and the letter was always written here in the text and the specific role it was to play for us. We must then listen and learn the plan of Elohim and know we must change within if we are to enter the promised land and Messiah will guide us and teach us how to enter in and possess the good land. Shalom!

Pi'nechas Parasha 2007-8 Message - Count the Cost

Count the Cost
For Parasha Pi'nechas
By Lovingneighbor 7-19-2008

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Bamidbar also called Numbers, and is called Pi'nechas which means 'Mouth of Copper'. In this weeks parasha:

- Pi'nechas is given the covenant of peace from YHWH for slaying Zimri and Kozbi
- YHWH commands Moshe to vex and smite the Midyanim
- Moshe is commanded to number Yisra'el for war
- The children of Yisra'el are numbered for war
- The number of men over 20 was 601,730
- The land shall be divided by lot and by size
- The families of the Levi'im were numbered
- Moshe numbers all the people and there was none from the numbering at Sinai except Kalev and Yahushua
- The daughters of Tzelohchad pleaded to Moshe for an inheritance
- YHWH tells Moshe the laws of inheritance
- YHWH tells Moshe the see the promised land from mount Aviram then he shall die
- Moshe asked YHWH to set a man over Yisra'el to replace him
- YHWH told Moshe Yahushua shall replace him as leader of Yisra'el
- The law of the continual daily offering is given
- The law of the special offerings for the sabbath are given
- The law of the special offerings for the new moon are given
- The law for the special offerings for Pesach and the Feast of Unleavened Bread are given
- The law of the special offerings of Shavuot are given
- The law of the special offerings of Yom Teruah are given
- The law of the special offerings of Yom Kippur are given
- The law of special offerings for Sukkot are given
- Haftarah - Eliyahu fled for his life and YHWH fed him and instrcted him to appoint 2 Kings and a prophet

In this weeks parasha we see a series of events that can be summed up in a counting of the cost. It starts with Pi'nechas who as the scripture says was Jealous for his Elohim. The word there is translated zealous, but the root word is kanaw which is the same word for jealous used in ex 20 in the commandments. The second commandment in particular which deals with idols. The man's name who was slain was Zimri which means musical, son of Salu which means weighed. The woman's name is Kozbi which means false, daughter of Zur which means rock, So what it is saying I beleive may be about satan, musical weighed I think is a reference to satan who I beleive it says was musical, and the false rock or false Truth.
It says that Moshe will vex Midyan which means strife because of it's deceit and it beguiled Yisra'el which is a word first used for what the serpent did. This goes to the prophecy about the children of Chavah.

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

So there will be strife and vexation between Moshe (drawn out) the children of Yisra'el and the serpent.

This was the cost of the serpents actions back in B'reisheet. It reminds me of the verse:

Luk 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
Luk 14:29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
Luk 14:30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
Luk 14:31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

This takes us into the counting of the men of Yisra'el to go to war. As Mashiach said you must know what you have, You have to count the cost. This is made apparent in the choices we make and the sin we do. I think the whole sacrificial system and Mashiach and the torah are all about counting the cost of sin and righteousness. The torah is simply a scale that weighs the thought and actions of men.

1Sa 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for YHWH is a El of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.

Pro 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but YHWH weighs the spirits.

The whole concept of the torah carries stories of men sacrificed to teach other men. When the people pick up stones and stone a man it is not just to put him to death, but it is a lesson to all the people involved. So also is the torah a lesson to us. A lesson of righteousness and wickedness and the cost of those actions to all the men and women of the Scriptures. Judgement is the weighing of the scales to learn from these that went before us.

Moshe knows he is going to die and that was the cost of his actions and asks that another man is put over Yisra'el. Yahushua son of Nun is chosen and the honor and burden of the people will be put upon him. There is a great cost of leadership and it is a great service.

Next we finish with the offerings for the various holy days. These also are the costs of each of these lessons contained in the holy days. The whole system is a measure of cost and with all the sacrifices and the sacrifice of Mashiach we are to see the great cost of sin. I don't know if this can be pounded enough. Mashiach who is of ultimate value, the son of Elohim, if he sins will pay the cost just like Moshe. I don't think people are listening. There is a cost of sin and it will be paid. many run around exclaiming Mashiach paid their price and there is no more payment for sin. I think they are far from the truth. Mashiach I beleive came to show us how great the cost of sin truly is and to encourage us to stop sinning so that we won't have to pay the wages of sin. This is the true gospel of repentance and to change your ways so you can obtain mercy. Men who sin with no regard to the price are going to face judgement in my opinion and like the parable of the talent, those who have made foolish choices will have what they thought they had taken from them and cast out. In this world of credit and foolishness people spend and spend and don't count the cost of their actions. But that bill will come and you will pay what is required of you. Shalom!
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
