The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

The Wilderness

For Parasha Bamidbar

By Lovingneighbor 5-27-2006

In this weeks Parasha we start the book of numbers. The following is a summary of topics for this Parasha:

Numbering of Yisrael

Assembling and numbering of the tribes for the men of war

Arranging tribes by standard and location by temple

Levites given to Aharon instead of Firstborn (Redemption of Firstborn)

Charges and Duties Given to Levites

Laws for moving the Tabernacle and Camp

Haftarah - Prophecy of Northern house of Israel being scattered and returned

In this weeks parasha YHWH commands Moshe to number the men of war from every tribe. Moshe Gathers all the children of Israel over twenty years old. He first gathers the heads of the 12 tribes, the princes. Sound familiar? Who did Yahushua gather to him first when he came in the flesh? Then he took them and assembled or gathered ALL the congregation of Israel.

Num 1:18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.

Another interesting point here is that he gathers the 12 princes of the 12 tribes and then assembles all the children of Israel 20 and uppward "by their polls" This word in the hebrew is LeGolgatha. Which by the skulls. I think we see a interesting model being shown here. Where MoshemodelingYahushua, gathers the 12 princes (apostles) and then gathers ALL the congregation according to their tribes, and this gathering happens by or in Golgatha ( the place or event of Messsiah's crucifiction).

Let's look real quick at the prophecy I believe is shadowed int he names of numbers 1:5-15. If you take all the names and their meanings in order from verse 5-15 it would read something like this:

Who sees the son, God is my Rock, Light of the almighty, who hears, God is my perfection, Rock of the almighty, praised of God, that fortells, my people are noble, He will bring a reward, given of God, a little one, habitation, My God, Father, Strong, let him add, double fruit, God of hearing, people of Praise, forgotten, son of right hand, Father of judgment, warlike, Judge, brother of help, people of the almighty, happy, god allots, a disturber, a army, God gathers, knowledge of God, that fights, brother of Lawlessness, having eyes

This segment seems to prophecy about Messiah in the beginning who fortells of Messiah's coming, and gathering of God's people to fight against the brother of lawlessness. Interesting this is sandwiched inbetween the gathering of the princes and the organizing of them by tribes to take a counting of all men who can go to war. Let's look at the next event the counting:

'The Counting' of the males of Israel over 20 that are able to go to war. It's interesting that after a little over a year of coming out of Egypt and all the battles and miracles that happened in that process the next thing YHWH does is count the men that are able to go to war. It seems as one battle ends another is being prepared for. The first battle is coming out of the rule of the world, but no sooneer than you do that, that you recieve the commandments of God and are being prepared for a future battle. Why did God Count the people?

Num 1:3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Yisrael: thou and Aharon shall number them by their armies.

The word used for number is Pawkad. It is used over 90 times in the book of numbers. It is a primitive root to visit. It's the concept of looking on or taking an accounting. It's interesting that to count something you must observe each one by itself and then also add it to the whole. I believe this is What Elohim is doing with Israel. He is making an assesment of every individual and adding it to the whole number of Israel. Notice they just came out of Egypt and were given the law, then looked over.

H6485

פּקד

pâqad

paw-kad'

A primitive root; to visit (with friendly or hostile intent); by analogy to oversee, muster, charge, care for, miss, deposit, etc.: - appoint, X at all, avenge, bestow, (appoint to have the, give a) charge, commit, count, deliver to keep, be empty, enjoin, go see, hurt, do judgment, lack, lay up look, make X by any means, miss, number, officer, (make) overseer have (the) oversight, punish, reckon, (call to) remember (-brance), set (over), sum, X surely, visit, want.

This word Pawkad is used in another verse we have seen in Exodus 20:4

Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I YHWH thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the lawlessness of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Exo 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

What does the numbering of Israel and third commandment have in common. The third commandment is about idolatry and serving other elohim. Does he look on and count the lawlessness of the fathers who bowed down to others and keep looking over their children and their children's children. What is he looking for? He then talks of mercy shown. Wouldn't that mercy be to those who turned from serving others to serving him. It seems that we pass many things down to our children and serving YHWH is different than serving other elohim. He shows us how to serve him and we are not to serve him as we served other elohim.

Jos 24:14 Now therefore fear YHWH, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye YHWH.

Jos 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve YHWH, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve YHWH.

He takes count of those who served other elohim and watches their children. I think this command has multiple applications. one being he obviously commands against it and will punish those who violate it. The second and main thrust I believe is those who did it but then repented and want to now serve YHWH. This makes sense because why would you need mercy if you never violated the law. So I think the mercy comes to those who turn from serving other mighty ones and recognize YHWH as the only true God and choose to serve him. Then I think he will continue to moniter or visit them and their children to ensure they don't revert to serving other gods or giving authority in their lives to old ways and things. They are also not allowed to try and serve YHWH in ways that other gods are served. Interesting that allowing others to have authority in your life and serving them happened in Egypt and in the nations they were going to to take the land. It seems to be a trait we can recognize about nations God casts out. Maybe this implies the reason they are being numbered for war, and who they will be going against in war. Lets look at the next event that happens in the wilderness: 'The Redemption'

YHWH redeemed the firstborn he was asking for from all the males and beasts and purchased them by taking the levites instead and returned the firstborn to ther families as seen in Numbers 3:46 - 51

Num 3:46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are more than the Levites;

Num 3:49 And Moses took the redemption money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites:

The firstborn were replaced with the Levites and the levites were to be dedicated to serving YHWH by doing the service of the tabernacle. It's interesting that Levi means attached, and the children of Israel who originally were to dedicate their firstborn to serve God were returned to their place and YHWH took Levi instead and drew them near to him to serve him. This seems to model the stranger who draws near, takes hold of the covenant, doesn't polute the sabbath, and does things that please him, they get a name better than son's and daughter's. name is the same as authority. Who has a better authority than sons and daughters in Israel, the priests. The sons are returned to their place in their tribes and the levites are attached like Efrayim and Menasheh were attached to Israel through Yosef. This whole sorting and organizing people where they belong is very interesting. First the 12 princes are gathered, then all the people are counted and arranged by tribes, given their place according the the temple, then the preists are chosen to draw nearer to God and serve him, they are then given their duties, and all this is done so Israel would know how to move as one part of the preparation of the people for war.

The bottom line is God creates all things with a role and purpose, both great and small. Even the bug world has complex relationships that they all do to keep the agricultural world in balance. God's house is no different. He visits and take account of all who he as called out and gives them a specific order and role in his community. His Torah is that instruction that teaches us how to act and what our role is. We must search it out and walk orderly according to our role. He establishes all these things for his greater plan. We individually must overcome our problems and battles but we also are part of a bigger picture. When we fight our own sin on a personal level, it will be counted, and yet we are also being prepared for a bigger battle and taking part in a bigger war with sin. Let us all be drawn out, assembled, counted, redeemed, put in our place, and prepared for the greater plan of God. Shalom!

Trained for War
For Parasha Bamidbar
By Lovingneighbor 5-24-2008

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Bamidbar also called Numbers, and is called Bamidbar which means 'In the Wilderness'. In this weeks parasha:

- Numbering of Yisrael
- Assembling and numbering of the tribes for the men of war
- Arranging tribes by standard and location by temple
- Levites given to Aharon instead of Firstborn (Redemption of Firstborn)
- Charges and Duties Given to Levites
- Laws for moving the Tabernacle and Camp
- Haftarah - Prophecy of Northern house of Israel being scattered and returned

In this weeks potion we get straight into the matter for which the people of Yisra'el were brought out. It was eluded to in the scriptures when they came out.

Exo 13:17 And it came to pass, when Para'oh had let the people go, that Elohim led them not through the way of the land of the Peleshtim, although that was near; for Elohim said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

So we see they were not ready to see war yet, and in this weeks parasha we see that the people are being put in formation around the temple and given their markcing orders. It's also noted in this verse one of the things they are being counted for.

Num 1:3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Yisra'el: thou and Aharon shall number them by their armies.

The numbering was for those who could go to war. So to follow the path here lets see, the children of Yisra'el were brought out from the largest army probably in the world maybe at that time. They were slaves and not men of war so YHWH fought for them.

Exo 14:25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Yisra'el; for YHWH fights for them against the Egyptians.

We see what the torah says about YHWH in the first song of Moshe

Exo 15:3 YHWH is a man of war: YHWH is his name.

So those were the Egyptians and then he gives them the Torah on Mt Sinai which is likened to a sword.

Heb 4:12 For the word of Elohim is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

YHWH all throuh the Torah is with Yisra'el and a deciding factor in their success or not in war.

Num 10:9 And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresses you, then you shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and you shall be remembered before YHWH your Elohim, and you shall be saved from your enemies.

Does this line up with what Mashiach said.

Mat 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

I believe he is YWHH Tsebaoth, captain of th armies of the Torah and the one who was the salvation of YHWH that fought for them at the sea of Suf but that is a whole other conversation.

My point is Yisra'el was drawn out like a sword and then sharpened by the giving of the Torah which describes the word of Elohim in how sharp it is. Then they are put in formation and the goal is to come to the promised land and that army and sword will be drawn on those who commited abomination

Lev 18:24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:

Here we get a clear view about why we are getting the lists of laws concerning eating clean and not commiting whoredom and unatural fornication. The promised land was given to the giants first and now they are getting cast out by an army YHWH has gathered.

Lev 20:23 And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.
Lev 20:24 But I have said unto you, You shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that flows with milk and honey: I am YHWH your Elohim, which have separated you from other people.

YHWH trained them, He drew them out like a sword and sharpened it and formed it and will bringit upon the gients in the promised land who have taken it by force.

Mat 11:12 And from the days of Yochanan the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

There is going to be a great battle and the violent men will be stopped. We see these images of war and great struggle al through the scriptures and in revelation. Funny how many people think they will get raptured away from the trouble and battle and then go in and enjoy the promised land. We are being prepared for war and the ones who would not fight like the 10 princes will die for not going in and taking the good land. These were the great men of Yisra'el and they would not fight, sound familiar? how about David and Goliath. Fact is we are not learning the Torah so we can now if we should use a microwave on the Shabbat, we are learning the word of truth which shall slay the lies and those who love and speak them. We study not to write books but to know truth and sharpen the sword as a soldiuer in the army of YHWH. Will you be ready for the day of battle with truth and wisdom. Don't slumber because the weak will be slain as they lay in lies and are lazy in the days of their training. Prepare yourself for YHWH to help fight for righteousness in his army to take back the kingdom of Heaven.

Isa 6:8 Also I heard the voice of YHWH, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Shalom
