Devarim Parasha Thoughts, Studies, and Comments

The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

The Weak made Strong
For Parasha Devarim
By Lovingneighbor 7-21-2007
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Devarim also called Deuteronomy, and is called Devarim which means 'Words'. In this weeks parasha:
- Moshe retells the law to the people
- Moshe commands the children of Yisra'el to go and possess the promised land
- Moshe says he cannot bear them alone because YHWH has blessed them and multiplied them
- Moshe sets up the captains, officers, and judges to help him rule over the people
- Moshe commands the children of Yisra'el to not be afraid but to possess the land of the Amori
- Moshe reminds the children of Yisra'el of the rebellion and evil report of the spies
- Moshe tells Yisra'el not to be afraid YHWH fights for them and leads them
- Moshe reminds Yisra'el why their fathers and Moshe were not allowed to enter the promised land
- Moshe tells how their fathers would not go up and then later went up without YHWH
- Their fathers went up anyway without YHWH and were destroyed
- Yisra'el commanded to pass through the land of Esav and not to take anything they don't pay for
- The land of Ar was given to Lot by removing the Emim
- The land of Se'ir was given to Esav for removing the Chori
- YHWH consumed the rebellious people during the 38 years in the wilderness
- The children of Ammon, Esav, and the Kaftorim removed the giants and took their land
- Yisra'el tried to pass peacefully through Sichon's land but he wouldn't let them
- Sichon made war with Yisra'el and Yisra'el utterly destroyed Sichon and his people
- Yisra'el didn't go to any place not given to them by YHWH
- Yisra'el utterly destroys Og king of Bashan and takes all his cities
- Og was the last of the giants, his bed was 13 1/2 feet long and 6 feet wide
- The land from Aro'er to half of Mount Gil'ad was given to the Re'uveni and the Gadi, and the land of Og was given to the half tribe of Menasheh
- The men of the Re'uveni, Gadi, and the half tribe of Menasheh must go over Yarden and fight with their brothers for their inheritance
- YHWH tells Yahushua not to fear because He will fight for him
- Haftarah - Yeshayahu's vision of the rebellion of Yisra'el
In this weaks parasha we have multiple common themes but I am choosing to focus on the concept of the weak being made strong. In this weeks parasha we have the children of Yisra'el being retold the law. Their fathers we given the law at Sinai and shown the promised land only to rebel and not go in when Elohim had brought themto it and delivered it into their hand. They feared the giants and that was in proportion to their lack of trusting in Elohim. leter they presumptuously went up without YHWH and were destroyed. Man to man they could not destroy the giants who were more man and more earthly than them. This paint the picture that if you choose sin it will rule over you harshly and you will not have free choice when you choose sin but it will rule over you. Man by himself is not strong enough to rule over himself but instead becomes ruled over by those more powerful then him. Man in this sense is much like the wife. Not strong enough to have dominion over themselves because if they try someone stronger will come and rule over them. they think they can rule over themselves but sin is what will be secretly ruling over them and like a snake they won't realize it has them until it is too late. It reminds me of the verse:
Gen 4:7 If you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. And unto you shall be his desire, but you are to rule over it
There is quite alot of meaning here. Which takes us into the problem of the fathers. They didn't do well so the giants ruled over them and destroyed them. If they had done well which would have been to listen to Elohim the first time they would have destroyed and ruled over these same giants that destroyed them. This model follows in the household also. If a woman will allow her husband to rule over her and listen to him and not be contrary to him then she shall be able to overcome her own sins and learn the ways of Torah. But if she refuses and decides to go her own way then she will not prosper. As a man is blessed and multiplies his house needs more help to be ruled over. This is like Moshe setting up the rulers in his house. If each has different levels of judgment even though it may be smaller than his, it can help him to keep his whole house in order. If none had any judgment how could he bare them all alone. But in like manner the wife should diligently seek to know her husbands judgment so she may help him. still submitting to his authority and being taught herself so she can help him rule over more of the house (ie. the children) as the children get older they too like captains can help with the other children. The more people in alignment with the husband and father the more they can manage to rule over a larger and more abundant house. If not you will have a hard job as the weaker portion of your house. But Elohim provides comfort for those facing an uphill battle. Elohim will fight for you if you are weak and outnumbered. Getting your wife on track may seem like battling a giant but with Elohim you can overcome and the result is man can dispossess the rebellion of his wife and posssess the good land that is the Garden.
So one of the common themes is that Elohim fights for the righteous when they are obeying Hm and building his name or authority. When they try and be strong for their own purposes they will not be successful. In this same principal when the woman or wife who is weaker obeys Elohim and her husband she is actually made strong and will fall under his protection and Elohim's. She will soon find this is needed to raise the children. As Messiah says a house divided cannot stand. When Yisra'el is Echad with Elohim they cannot be hurt, but once they become an adversary to Elohim the other nations waiting for their destruction overcome them. This is the same for a woman who once she goes out on her own she is suseptable to sin that desires to destroy her. This happened at the Garden when Eve decided to make her own decisions and waiting at the door or judgment was the serpent who desired to rule over her and rule over her choices. She was not going to be independant, she would just become another man's wife. rebellion is an abusive husband, and sin will kill her if she stays with him long enough she must leave him and seek another husband who will care for her and protect her. Her choices to stay and not to leave willbring her to destruction in the end. She just needs to make a choice of who she will allow to rule over her. I made this choice long ago when I decided to let Elohim make my choices and to tell me what to do. I knew when I was incharge I brought my life to destruction and I was tired of being a failure. So I allowed Elohim to tell me what to do and life and peace is all that flowed from that one decision.
Woman I urge you to rethink your decision making process and ask yourself how much of it you are in charge of and how much of every decision belongs and is directed by your husbands. Husbands, I urge you to look at how much you include Elohim in your decisions and remind you that if you fail to study and learn his judgment youw ill go up the hill and your blessings will be chased away like bees chasing you. YHWH will fight for us and with him the humble or weak can be made strong. There is strength in voluntarily choosing to humble yourself. This is the sense of the phrase when I am weak you make me strong. The weakness is not as much by nature but by choice in the form of humility and then a person will find that it is by nature because they will realize the power and might of both sin and YHWH and realize they will be servant to one or the other. Whether you are the ox or the donkey you are still an animal who will be harnessed by someone greater than you. Choose a master who will reward you for righteousness and not sin which will bring death when you obey it or will seek to destroy you if you turn from it. It is a ruler of destruction and all who touch it shall die. Make yourself weak before YHWH and he shall lift you up. Shalom!
