The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

- You shall have just weights and measures
- When you get your land of inheritance remember to blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven
- Haftarah YHWH has mercy on Yisra'el and takes them as His
In this weeks parasha we have an interesting thread that holds all these odd commandments together. This parasha seems to have off the wall unrelated commands given to Yisra'el. But there is one common thread and it is the fabric of God's chosen people. They are holy. Set apart in many ways from all the cultures of the time then and now. In this parasha we see many commands small and great that would make them a peculiar people among other nations.
Deu 14:2 For you art an holy people unto YHWH your Elohim, and YHWH has chosen you to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
Sometimes we see these seemingly small or strange commandments and we can't put a reason to them. But God did not choose any and all nations to be His he chose a particular group because we are to be like Him and it seems these commands are also a part of who God is. God is not this vague person but a particular person who will be followed by particular people that will be set apart and different from all others. What sets Him apart is His commandments and when we adopt His ways we are not only being like God but God is Holy and we are commanded to be Holy also. This is a relationship with God that is unlike any other. It is a relationship designed for complete uniformity to His will which in itself makes you very different than any others.
The problem with alot of religions like various sects of Christianity is they no longer look different than anyone else. You can't tell the difference unless they tell you they are a Christian. While this was never the case with God's people. They were different in so many ways compared to the nations around them. They way they dressed, thought, ate, worshipped, fought, and lived was contrary to popular standards. This is one of the very tough things to capture is the willingness to stand against the giants of the world and be different while at the same time totally conforming to God's will.
Tit 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
His people are zealous for good works. In this modern world there is alot of zeal but not for righteousness. It is much like the wars where everyone wants to be intolerant and force someone else to change but the real wars need to happen inside. Messiah says it best when he says take what's in your eye out first. He sets and order of correction. Yet most religion focus on evangelism and changing others. Is a peculiar people a group that changes others or are they peculiar because of their traits. All these commandments this week are things that set apart Yisra'el. I hope this gives you an interest and desire to both know and love even without knowing every little commandment in the Torah. They all make us different than the nations but similar to God.
It is not normal to allow a woman time to mourn if you want her for a wife after taking her from war. It is not normal to be willing to kill your own son if he is rebelious. It is not normal to return things you find. It is not normal to have just weights and measures. It is not normal to not charge your brother interest, or to raise up a seed for your brother if he dies childless. All these things are not normal for those nations around the children of God. They stand out as a marvelous light to all the nations around them and are set apart in every way.
1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Let's embrace the small things and different things in Torah and know that we are different than those around us. When we start to mix with the ways of the world we become different than God. Let's strive to be one with Him and this will make us set apart in a world of darkness. Shalom!

In this weeks parasha we start with an interesting set of laws concerning the woman who is captured in war and how to treat her if you desire her. One of the first things I found interesting is that it isn't just grab that one she's pretty, but she is allowed 30 days to mourn for her loss. I don't know that that would be allowed by any other culture in that situation. But the other point is it is good also for the Children of Yisra'el. She is to leave behind her past and identity and take on a new identity. Their torah will be her torah and even protection against being sold off is alloted her from the very begining after her time of mourning. The torah cares for the widow, fatherless, and poor. One of the significant features of the Torah community is that they care for the whole of society. With various laws to ensure they are treated justly and that they may eat of the corners of the fields of others. The torah creates a society that is good for th whole of the community. In the way it deals with sin and disease it thinks of the impact it will have on the whole society. Not like our culture today which feels anything is OK and we'll offer it all and let the people sort out what they don't like. We'll mix it all together and that willbe better. This is not the case in Torah. Even in your own house you must deal with rebellion in a serious manner. Cutting it off from your house. It reminds me of the words of the master:
Mat 5:29 And if your right eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell.
If a man had such judgment on his own body which is likened to his family how much more so in the whole community. Even in how they handle the dead things are done in a specific manner not to defile the land which will bring trouble on all the people. There is two main concepts that get talked about in this parasha. Those are mixing and the good of all. Fromt he start we see the mixing of women of spoil into Yisra'el and the mixing of rebelion in your house, the mixing of clothes and roles of men and women, The mixing of the dead and the living, an ox and a donkey and th work they do, the seeds, adultery, rape, leperosy, the poor and wealthy, living brothers and dead brothers, All these things are showing us that there are things that don't belong in the community of YHWH and in the house of YHWH. There are things in a man's heart that don't belong. It's about being pure and holy.
2Co 6:14 Be you not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion has light with darkness?
The funny thing is we now who are coming out of darkness and not yet attained it yet look on others who we percieve to be dark and say to ourselves what place do we have with them. Boasting of our righteoussness like the pharisee
Luk 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, Elohim, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
When those who think they are the righteous are not and it is better to understand you don't deserve to be with the righteous because you would defile them. Seek to sit with the righteous. Seek to not be the defilement you are. Look upon yourself and the things in your life and ask what place they have in your life. If it is not righteous cast it out and cleanse yourself so you may be joined to Yisra'el. If Yisra'el is full of defilement then it shall be cast away and who shall be left but the children. If you know what is good for all you would stay away when your sick. You would clothe yourself if your a woman. You would submit to your husbands and children to their father. You would think of others and that would force you to better yourself because being average is what makes the average. Being lukewarm makes the hot cool and the cool hot.
Rev 3:15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were cold or hot.
Rev 3:16 So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue you out of my mouth.
Having mild standards fools the unjust into thinking they are not that bad and makes the righteous not try so hard. I am a competitive man and it is a great trait when properly applied. I expect to have a good battle when I compete and if I don't it makes me soft. A good beating either makes a man fear conflict or strive to overcome and improve himself. Stop being average because it is the worst. And if you have chosen to be righteous then be that and have no part in yourself that is joined to unrighteous acts. This will be for the good of all. Shalom!
