The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Confirm
For Parasha Ki Tavo
By Lovingneighbor 9-9-2006
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Deuteronomy also called Devarim, and is called Ki Tavo which means 'When you come'. In this weeks parasha:
- The brining of the firstfruits
- Giving of the basket of firstfruits to the priests and professing that you are come to the promised land
- Proclamation at the altar
- Proclamation after ending tithing
- Declarations of you and God for the covenant
- Command to make the stones of the law
- Command to make altar on mount Eval
- That day they become the people of YHWH
- 6 tribes commanded to stand on mount Gerizim
- 6 Tribes to stand on mount Eval
- 12 cursings spoken and all the people said amain
- 12 blessings given
- 30 curses spoken about Yisra'el if they won't obey
- The nation that shall come against Yisra'el
- The plagues, and distress that will come upon Yisra'el for disobediance
- The scattering of Yisra'el for disobediance
- They have seen much but don't have eyes that see, heart to perceive, and ears that hear
- Haftarah the future city of Tziyon described
In this weeks parasha we see a few interesting things. the first is the bringing of the firstfruits. and it done with a proclamation that you are come tot he promised land. This is significant because what it is essentially saying is that God kept His promise to Avraham and brought you to the promised land. The firstfruit confirms that it is a good and fertile land as was promised also. When we give to God the firstfruits we are confirming the promises He made and bringing proof that he has blessed us. To bring a tithe of firstfruits is to say God has blessed me ten times this much and here is the proof.
When we bring it to the altar we are confirming that we will dwell with God as he has promised. We will eat at the table of our master and He is among us. This goes into the confirmation of the covenant.
Deu 26:17 You have declared YHWH this day to be your Elohim, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice:
Deu 26:18 And YHWH has declared you this day to be his peculiar people, as he has promised you, and that you should keep all his commandments;
Though it was spoken before that they were his people at Mt. Sinai it was not yet confirmed until this point, because between Sinai and the promised land many fell away. In the same way the law was given at Sinai and yet it was written this time a little different in the confirmation before entering into the promised land.
Deu 27:8 And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.
This word or phrase is to engrave them well or good. This concept can be interpreted a few different ways, but one way is to say that just as Messiah came and taught Torah in very simple terms, spiritual terms like don't be abgry with your brother without cause. This was the simple understanding of you shall not murder. Don't look on a woman with lust is the simple way or spiritual teaching of you shall not commit adultery. Messiah had a way of taking the complex and making it simple and plain, yet it included all the other expressions and more. This is what I call the spirit of Torah. I beleive Messiah was teaching the spirit of Torah and thus confirming all the things Moshe taught plus more expressions of the same commandments while making it very simple and plain to understand. This is what I beleive was happening at Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Eval with the writing ot the law a second time.
To finish it off the blessings and cursings would be confirmed before entering into the promised land. Repeated again in simple terms to teach the broad spectrum of what they experianced so far. God discloses fully what the reward and punishments are of the relationship they are entering into. By taking the promised land they are agreeing to all the terms established with Avraham and will be held to the terms fully. God is doing His part in giving them the good land and now their accountability is increased because there are certain commandments that were given specifically to be done once they go into the promised land. They were rehearsing them up until this point. We ourselves are likened to those in the wilderness. Learning the Torah of YHWH and rehearsing the holy days and commandments so that we may be ready to enter into that Good land and so that in the day when we declare YHWH to be our God and He declares us to be His peculiar people that we may confirm all the words of His promise and do them. Shalom!

To Taste of the Heavenly Things
For Parasha Ki Tavo
By Lovingneighbor 8-6-2007
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Deuteronomy also called Devarim, and is called Ki Tavo which means 'When you come'. In this weeks parasha:
- When you come into the land you shall bring your firstfruits to YHWH
- You shall give the firstfruits to the priest and proclaim you have entered the promised land
- You shall proclaim before the altar that YHWH brought you out of Egypt to the promised land
- In the third year you shall give your tithe to the Levi'im, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow
- Once you give your 3rd year tithes you shall proclaim you have given it and ask for a blessing on the people and the land
- You shall keep and do all the commandments with all your heart and soul
- You shall declare YHWH is your Elohim and He will declare you are His people
- You shall make an altar on Mount Eval and make stones with the law written on them
- The priests tell Yisra'el this day they have become the people of YHWH
- 6 tribes shall be on Mount Eval declaring the cursings
- 6 tribes shall be upon Mount Gerizim declaring the blessings
- All the curses spoken about Yisra'el if they don't obey
- YHWH shall bring a fierce nation against Yisra'el for disobediance
- Plagues and distress shall come upon Yisra'el for disobeying
- Yisra'el will be scattered for disobediance
- Yisra'el has seen many things but lacked a heart to understand, eyes to see, and ears to hear until this day
- Haftarah - The future city of Tziyon promised
In this weeks parasha we have a common theme that encompasses all the points. It is alluded to in the name and opening verse, When you come into the land. It first talks about the firstfruits and how they saw all that they have and finnally came to the land and they shall proclaim YHWH has brought them to this good land. They are tasting of the Gift of YHWH in Heaven. Their firstfruits are the increase of all they have given by YHWH. BEfore they can taste of it they must come and proclaim YHWH has given it to them. This really sets the bar and timeframe. The word taste Taw'am a root word is spelled tet, ayin, mem and in the ancient Hebrew it could mean vessel, percieve, waters or womb. The word taste and some of it's variants can mean mouth or palate. The mouth is the vessel we use to percieve the waters or the womb which represents the world before entering the kingdom. Like a child who learns about things by putting them in their mouths. They experince the differences in a sensitive part of their body to learn even before they can walk or gain control of their limbs very well. This is the meaning of taste.
Psa 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
We learn through the world and His word that YHWH is good. Through experiance we become sensitive to good and evil. A variant for the word taste is also used for judgment as in this verse.
Psa 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
So when you come eludes to the tasting of the Heavenly promises. That good land which is describes as food flowing with milk and honey. The promises and teachings of Elohim are many times described as foods like the bread of life, the Bread from Heaven, the manna, the wine. These are things we will experiance with our mouth. The very word of Elohim our Messiah is something we experiance with our mouth. Words are shaped and felt in the mouth as a deaf person who can put their hand on your mouth and listen to what your saying.
So this parasha is about what happens once you come into the land. What happens after you experience the good things. The beginning is to admit and proclaim that He has indeed given you the good things. Once you do that, in the third year you proclaim you have given to those who don't have a leader over them in this good land. they are not from here, their husband is gone, their father is gone. After three years you shall give to those who are not like you. You are a man tasting of the Heavenly things and the good land and after that you are expected to bear fruit for others around you who have not yet enjoyed such a blessing. This would point to the fact that you do not let your blessings stop at you but you reinvest them in others. This is likened to remembering when you were strangers in Egypt and a bite of heavenly food was given to you that you might live and later glorify YHWH and give life to others.
You yourself must be a good seed so that when you die your death would bring more fruit of life than just death. This is the model of the seed that goes into the earth and then dies and sprouts forth life more abundantly. A seed by itself is not very filling for food, but if it is a good seed it's potential in the earth is to bring forth much more food and much more seed to bring both life and multiplication of life in the future.
The next point is Yisra'el is declared the people of YHWH that day and the cursings and blessings are retold. This means that they have reached a point of accountability and more importantly they are going into another level. Just as it says they saw many things but didn't have a heart to percieve , eyes to see, or ears to hear until this day. They have reached a marker. Just like the title when you come. Just like passing over Yarden. The initial training is over and just like a grade in school after the learning is done a test is coming an expectation of achievment and a grade of passing or failing. Then you move to a whole other level. The blessings and cursings are a reminder to be excited you've made it this far and yet sober that you are expected to perform at a higher level now and will be cursed if you backslide on things you should know. As it says in Hebrews if you have tasted the heavenly teachings and then turn back you put your teacher to shame.
Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
Heb 6:5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
Heb 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
We have a very long section at the end of this parasha about how bad it will be if they turn back to evil once in the land. worse than they had ever known in the wilderness. As the scripture says it would have been better for them to have never known good then to have known and tasted and then turned back.
Eze 18:21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
Eze 18:22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
Eze 18:23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
Eze 18:24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.
In this weeks parasha we realize it isn't just about getting into the kingdom that matters but to not then turn to wickedness after we go all that way to taste the good things. Messiah summarizes this I think in the verse about the manna.
Joh 6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
Joh 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
Joh 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Here he says they tasted and then turned as Moshe prophesied before his death they would and yet when he finally gathers Yisra'el in they will not turn but live forever. This is the second harvest and is prophesied in the Haftarah this week.
Stop boasting of your selection, your position, or th surety of your salvation and inclusion into the kingdom, because as Heb 6:11-12 says this leads to lazyness. You are learning skills and things you will need in the kingdom. It is not enough to be in the kingdom but you must bear fruit when planted or you will be cast down. Fight to taste of the Heavenly things and then guard them and do them that you might live forever. Shalom!
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
