Va'etchanan Parasha Thoughts, Studies, and Comments

The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Remember Me

For Parasha Va'etchanan

By Lovingnieghbor 8-5-2006

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Deuteronomy also called Devarim, and is called Va'etchanan which means 'And I Besought'. In this weeks parasha:

  • Moshe teaches commandments then Yahushua takes over and brings people into the promised land
  • Moshe warns people not to forget all they have seen and heard
  • Moshe reminds them of the giving of the 10 commanments
  • Yisra'el reminded not to make any idols
  • Moshe says he must stay on this side of the Yarden
  • Reminder not to forget the covenant
  • Moshe calls Heaven and Earth to witness the prophecy of Yisra'el commiting idolatry and being scattered
  • Moshe tells Yisra'el not to forget the signs and wonders.
  • Cities of Refuge set up on this side Yarden, where YHWH drove out nations before them
  • 10 commandments respoken
  • Moshe tells Yisra'el to remember the fear they had when God Spoke to them and not to forget him once they are blessed
  • Shema given and Moshe commands Yisra'el to diligently teach their children
  • Yisra'el commanded to cast out those whose land they are given and destroy them
  • Haftarah command to repent and forshadowing of Messiah and the millenium

In this weeks parasha I was moved by the core concept of the whole message. It touched me to the deepest parts. God's people have always had a problem with remembering God's instruction or Torah. It started with Eve who was misled by the twisting of God's instruction. There has been one culprit who would like the commandments of YHWH to be forgotten and his words, but God has immersed us in reminders, though it is our test to see if we will remember.

Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shalt be no priest to me: seeing you have forgotten the law of your Elohim, I will also forget your children.

To start let's look at the key word that summarizes this section. The most basic message that Moshe gives is to remember. Moshe is not going over Yarden and urges Yisra'el to remember the very things that are our stories we are reading. For those people they watched it first hand and still had a problem remembering what God had done. God was around them in so many powerful ways everyday and they still forgot him. How much more is their remembrance of these things the very reason we have the scriptures today. The concept of remembering comes from the word zakar.

A verb meaning to remember, to mention, to recall, to think about, to think on, to be remembered, to recall, to acknowledge, to mention, to make known. The basic meaning indicates a process of mentioning or recalling either silently, verbally, or by means of a memorial sign or symbol.

Deu 4:9 Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life: but teach them your sons, and your sons' sons;

Remembering starts with you and finishes with your children. This creates a perpetual memorial and remembrance. Lets see how God reminds us. First he tells us.

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word is God's revelation to mankind. The foundation of our belief in God comes from some knowledge of God revealed to us or given to us. Like all prophecy when we hear it, then see it or perceive evidence of it's truth, we believe it. It has been established when we hear and see. These same signs and wonders were heard then seen by Moshe when he went to the people and said he was sent from God then showed them signs and they believed. But all through the process they seemed to forget. Once we have experienced God, he gives us reminders. The hebrew word ot, which means evidence, sign or token. One of these tokens to cause us to remember is the one of Exodus we are to put on our hand.

Exo 13:9 And it shall be for a sign unto you upon your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that YHWH'S law may be in your mouth: for with a strong hand has YHWH brought you out of Egypt.

This token is to remind us YHWH brought us out of Egypt by a strong hand. Then we have the commandments on the door posts to remind us of the blood of the lamb or teachings of the lamb should be upon our houses and those dwelling or living in his teachings shall be saved from the angel of death. Next we have the Tzi Tzis. They are to be carried with us for us and others to see wherever we go, not to vary our judgment but to always do what is right. Then we have the necklace which is to be over our heart and the commandments are to guide us, we are to gaurd them, and we are to ponder them. These are all reminders we can see. We are surrounded by them all day long because we are quick to forget.

Next we have the sabbath. A whole day used to remember God and his words, recounting the stories of what God did to our fathers and the nations before us. Then we have all the holy days, that walk us through the plan of salvation from beginning to end to remind us of what has happened and what is yet to come. We have time set aside as a reminder every week, month and all throughout the year.

We have circumcision. A sign in our flesh, that reminds us of the covenant made with Avraham. And we have his word that teaches us and reminds us just like Moshe was doing with the Children of Yisra'el.

We are surrounded by reminders, they are ever before us, and yet we continue to forget God. All he has done from the foundation of the Earth was for our good, and no matter how many reminders he gives us, even when they are posted on our doors, hanging around our necks, hanging off our clothes, with time set apart every week, at the first of the month, and all throughout the year, in our flesh and in the sky, in his word, and all his creation. We forget him when we make decisions. We forget him when we speak. We forget him when we are afraid. We forget him when we are angry. We forget him when we are hungry. We forget him when we are thirsty. We forget him when we are full. We forget him when we are tested. We forget Him and his instruction on a daily basis in our actions, thoughts, and deeds. One of his greatest attributes is he doesn't change. Though we forget him, no matter how hard he tries to remind us of his Torah and love for us. He will never forget his promise to Avraham, He will never forget his law, He will never forget his children, He will never forget his Love. Oh if we could be like our Father! All he wants is for us to remember him in all that we do. He has done everything to put his Torah and Himself into our lives, He has surrounded us with reminders that we forget everyday though they are hanging all over us. May we each learn to remember our Father. May we stop forgetting him in our lives, and may we teach our children so that the world will never forget Him. Shalom!

The Way, The Truth, and The Life
For Parasha Va'etchanan
By Lovingneighbor 7-28-2007

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Devarim also called Deuteronomy, and is called Va'etchanan which means 'And I Besought'. In this weeks parasha:

- Moshe asked to go over and see the good land but YHWH was angry with him
- YHWH told Moshe to see the land but Yahushua will take them into the land
- Yisra'el is to live out the words of YHWH not adding or taking away from them that they may live
- The nations will say how great is Yisra'el who has Eohim so near to them and such a great Torah
- Keep the Torah and teach it to your children and your children's children
- When YHWH gave you the Torah you saw no image so you would not make any images to worship
- Moshe tells the people YHWH was angry at him for their sakes and wouldn't let him enter the promised land
- Don't forget His covenant and make any graven image or let your children make any images
- Moshe says Yisra'el will perish off the land and be scattered for idolatry
- If scattered Yisra'el seeks Him with their whole heart He will be merciful
- Elohim had chosen Yisra'el and delivered thm out of Egypt to keep His commandments
- Moshe set apart the three cities of refuge on this side of Yarden
- Moshe sets before Yisra'el the Torah on this side of Yarden in the land of giants
- Moshe stood between YHWH and the people when YHWH made the covenant with them at Chorev
- YHWH gives Yisra'el the first five commandments
- YHWH gives Yisra'el the second five commandments
- YHWH wrote th ten commandments on two tables of stone
- When the people heard the voice of YHWH they asked Moshe to talk with Him and they would listen to Moshe
- Moshe is told the Torah to teach Yisra'el that they may do them and live
- The Shema is given
- The command to teach the commandments to your children and speak of them during the day
- You shall bind the commandments on your hand for a sign
- You shall post the commandments on the posts of your house and the gates of your city
- Don't forget YHWH after he has blessed you
- You shall not go after other elohim but diligently keep the commandments
- When your children ask you about the commandments you shall tell them about the plan of Elohim
- Yisra'el shall utterly destroy the nations cast out before them and destroy their idolatry
- YHWH has chosen Yisra'el to be His holy people and He will have mercy on those who keep His commandments
- Don't compare YHWH to His creation because He is greater than all

In this weeks portion we have many significant things, the covenant, The shema, The commandments, Yisra'el being the chosen people, and the signs of Elohim. But they can be broken into three categories. There are 29 points in this weeks parasha, 9 about truth, 8 about the way, 6 about life and 5 that are a combination of all 3. That leaves 1 left and that one concludes the whole message. Let's take a look at the points and their significance.

There is a pattern here also that follows the way is the start or peshat(Literal) the truth is the second witness (ramez) the life is understanding (d'rash) and doing them (widsom/Sod). It is following the path to Elohim.

Pro 16:22 Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.

Ecc 7:12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

This message is titled the way, the truth, and life and comes from the verse about Messiah:

Joh 14:6 Yahushua saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

This embodies Messiah and Parasha Va'etchanan. As a matter of fact the transition from Moshe or the Letter of the law to Yahushua and the spirit of the law is the first section of this portion. Moshe asks if he can go over into the promised land and it was not for him do do so. He did his job in bringing the Children of Yisra'el to the promised land and showing it to them and preparing them for it, but Yahushua was to bring them into it. Moshe in this example embodies the way to Messiah as Paul said.

Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Mashiach, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

This eludes to Moshe not bringing the people into the land. We also see Yisra'el being brought out of Egypt to receive the commandment. This is the first step of the way. Then the people said they didn't want to hear Elohim directly but they wanted to listen to Moshe and he would tell them what to do. This is the people fearing the spirit and unknowable things of the Torah and wanting just the Peshat to act as a go between to teach them things of the torah. They wanted something tangible they could see and look upon to teach them th scary unseen things.

Next we have the sign on the hand and the fact that though the literal commandments are the first thing taught, the spirit of loving Elohim and fear of Elohim is the actual beginning of wisdom and life because if you keep the commandments for other reasons eventually you will find your religion is vanity and empty. The aleph and tav form a cycle or band that rely on each other and cannot be broken. You need the spirit of love to keep the commandments, and when you learn the commandments they will reveal the spirit of love and that will cause you to be able to better keep the commandments and the cycle repeats every time getting richer and richer.

This goes to the second point the truth. The second witness establishes truth. in the second point we see Yahushua will lead the people into the promised land. He is the second witness and will establish the promises of Elohim. The good land they enter into is their spirit. In contrast to the letter of the law Yahushua will guide them inthe spirit of the law and take them inside the promised land.

2Co 3:6 Who also has made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.

YHWH also showed no image because Yisra'el would have started to worship earthly things that were small shadows of even their heavenly counterparts and that is far from the all great YHWH who created all things as we see in the haftarah. You cannot try and see Elohim as part of His creation because all the nations are like a drop in the bucket compared to YHWH. YHWH then gives also the second five commandments as the second witnesses to loving Elohim. He wrote them on two tables of stone Representing the two great truths and witnesses of love which make up the truth. Truth is like the Shema. YHWH echad. He is one, He is truth. He is established. He is complete. He is not earthly, He is all.

Next we have the life. We see this in verse 4:1 where he says to hear and do the statutes and judgments that we may live. And then it goes into saying you shall teach them to your children and your children's children. I liken this to life because when you have a child your life and inheritance continues through them. By teaching them the torah and more importantly teaching them to teach their children you ensure with those two witnesses that the torah will live forever. You cannot break the chain or band of truth.

Then we have 5 verses that embody all three of these concepts to show us the way of YHWH. First is Moshe set the torah before them on this side of Yarden. This embodies the way, the truth and life as Moshe has taken them through the wilderness and now gives them the torah again esablishing the letter of the law before handing them off to Yahushua who will establish the spirit of Torah with them

Next Moshe retells how he was told the torah to teach the children of Yisra'el to bring them to this point. As YHWH tells him all to teach the children He says Oh that they had a heart to fear Him and keep His commandments. He looks forwar to them making it to the next level of Spiritual torah so they could possess the promised land. Next we have the posting of the commandments on the posts of your house and the gates of the city. The posts were where you personaly judge and come and go and also of your role in the city as the judges of th city sat at the gates of the city. This embodies the way of learning, the truth in establishing what you see and do, and the life that it brings into your city and house. After all if you keep and do the commandments no nation can come against you and your house will not be spoiled. Finnaly the response to your children asking about the commandments was to show them the plan of Elohim and teach them so they make it all the way and the cycle is not broken. The final point left out of this three section message is the that after you do all this don't forget YHWH.

Deu 6:11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
Deu 6:12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Deu 6:13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

In closing we see that the way out of Egypt or oppression is through Messiah, He represents the love of Elohim and Moshe like John the baptist comes before him by way of the letter of the law saying stop sinning and return to fearing and obeying YHWH and His Torah. This prepares you for the truth or spirit of Torah. The vessel must be clean for the spirit to dwell. When the spirit dwells it makes holy all that it touches. Finnaly we through our children shall keep Torah alive and keep life in our household. Like our Heavenly Father who lives through His son we also will expand the heavens through our wives and children to generations. Shalom!

A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
