The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

From Father to Son
For Parasha Ekev
By Lovingneighbor 8-4-2007
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Devarim also called Deuteronomy, and is called Ekev which means 'Because'. In this weeks parasha:
- If you will hearken, keep, and do the commandments you shall be blessed
- You shall not fear the nations that were cast out before you
- YHWH will deliver the nations into your hand little by little to destroy and you shall not learn their ways
- YHWH used the time in the wilderness to correct and test you like a son to see if you'll keep His ways
- If we will walk in His ways YHWH will bring us into the good land
- Beware unless after you are blessed you forget YHWH
- YHWH brought us through the terrible wilderness to humble us with many tests
- YHWH gives the power to gain wealth
- If you forget YHWH you will perish like the nations cast out before you
- The nations are stronger than you but with YHWH you can overcome them
- Don't think your coming into the promised land because of your righteousness
- Moshe reminds them how rebelious they have been and talks of the golden calf
- Moshe reminds them they have been rebelious since the day he knew them
- Moshe interceded to save Yisra'el from Judgment
- YHWH gives Moshe the second set of commandments to put in the ark
- Yisra'el journeyed to Moserah where Aharon died
- YHWH seperated the tribe of Levi to minister to Him
- Moshe stayed in the mount 40 days and 40nights and intereceded for Yisra'el
- YHWH requires you to fear Him, walk in Hs ways, and keep His commandments
- Circumcise your heart because YHWH loves you and executes judgment
- You shall keep the commandments because YHWH has multiplied you
- Because you have seen the great acts of YHWH you shall keep the commandments
- If you serve Elohim with all your heart He shall give you rain in it's season
- Teach your children His torah at all times so that you and them may live
- If you keep all His commandments you shall posses all the land where you go
- Haftarah - YHWH shall deliver those who trust in Him and shall save His children
In this weeks Parasha we see a common theme of the relationship between a father and his son and how that relates to life and death. Having a child is a life and death situation just ask any woman. It is actually a life and death situation for everyone involved. The child first off is in a life and death situation. If it does not turn it's head down and humble itself it would not be born and could kill the mother. Now we cut the mom open and give birth to the rebelious child but for most of history it would not be so. If the mother dies and the baby, then in a sense the man dies also because his ability to reproduce and carry on life will die with him. The man with no seed and no heir is really dying. There will be no more after him and his teachings and authority/name will not pass. This is a central theme in today's parasha. There are three words that mean one thing and that encompass this weeks parasha. If, because, and the result. These are the 3 meanings of the word Ekev. Spelled ayin, kuph, vet in the ancient Hebrew that can mean the eye, opens or closes, on the house. open or closes is pictured in the sun at the horizon for the letter kuph. This weeks parasha speaks words that many don't want to hear. Like in the opening verse where the covenant and mercy are given (If) you hearken, keep, and do the commandments. In reflexive thought it means if you don't you will neither have the covenant or mercy. This goes right in the face of many teachings about salvation and the new covenant. This is elaborated in verse 10:12-13 where it says YHWH will require you to fear Him, walk in His ways, and love Him. This is not a option and gift you are giving Him for extra blessings, it is a requirement. People don't want to believe this because as Messiah said if a servant only does what is required of him shall he gain a reward.
So we see the pattern of the if being the choice one makes, the because being what happens due to the choice, and the result or end of the man whether it is life or death they will end up with based on the scales of choices they have made in their lives. Again people don't want to hear this because it has implications. They would rather hear that you can choose death all your life and by choosing life at least once your scales will be fine. They count on a mercy that isn't just and forgivness that isn't judgement and in doing this they forget as this portion elaborates that mercy comes by keeping all the commandments with your whole heart, not keeping one with your whole heart or keeping them all without keeping them spiritually also. By having a no worries attitude they slide deeper and deeper into half hearted love and sloppy commandment keeping because they believe they have alread achieved mercy now and in the future. They in many ways have lost their fear of YHWH and this is always the path of destruction.
So lets talk about life. What is it and how do we prolong it. Life appears in three forms that I can see in the flesh. The life of the man which is tied to his decisions. As Moshe said choose life. Then we have a man's wife who is one with him. If she chooses death for him like Eve then he will die. he either corrects her so she and him can live or follows her and dies also. This is likened to loving Him with your whole heart. How can a house divided stand. So also you must teach your wife as Messiah says she is your own flesh, to love YHWH. When the two become one in love for YHWH new life is born. This child prolongs your days and if you store up your treasure which is torah in your child you will live even though you die. If you teach them to teach their children then you will continue to live. This is why I think we are always told to remember YHWH and keep His commandments because then He lives through us and His light continues to light the world. The heavenly Father lives through His son. Messiah lives through us and in our hearts His blood brings new life to us and preserves His name. This pattern stops when a man either doesn't learn His ways or does not teach them to his children and by teaching them to teach their children he teaches his children's children. The if to because of the word ekev is like the aleph to the tav it is a cycle and yet if the cycle is done it will repeat and be a binding that is not broken. If the man does not teach his children then the cycle only goes around once and ends in death. We see this with Noach and the world that didn't keep or teach their children to keep the torah and they were cut off. The band was broken and yet in my estimation the band upon the hand and around the neck of Noach was not broken and he started the new cycle of life by teaching his children to obey YHWH. In closing we must remember that Moshe, Yahushua, and YHWH diligently work on teaching their children so that they may live and that the cycle is not broken and satan and the wicked ones who sought to destroy the children shall have their children and band broken in the end. Rememeber YHWH, don't forget Him. and teach your children that your days may be prolonged. Shalom!
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to me: seeing you have forgotten the law of your Elohim, I will also forget your children.
