For Yom Kippur Reading
By Lovingneighbor 9-22-2007
This weeks reading is for the Holy Day Yom Kippur which means "Day of Attonement". In this reading:
- YHWH tells Moshe to tell Aharon not to come at any time into the holy place
- Aharon shall bathe himself and put on the holy garments
- Aharon shall take a bullock for himself and a ram for Yisra'el for a sin offering and bring two goats to the door of the tabernacle
- Aharon shall cast lots upon the two goats
- Aharon shall bring the goat that YHWH's lot fell upon and offer him for a sin offering
- The other goat shall be the scapegoat and presented alive before YHWH to let him go into the wilderness
- Aharon shall bring the bullock of the sin offering for himself and kill it for a sin offering
- Aharon shall burn incense upon the altar of incense to cover the mercy seat
- Aharon shall sprinkle the blood of the sin offering for himself and the people seven times before the mercy seat
- Aharon shall put the blood of the sin offering upon the horns of the altar and sprinkle the altar seven times
- Aharon shall put his hands on the head of the scapegoat and confess all the sins of Yisra'el and send him into the wilderness
- Aharon shall put off the holy garments, bathe himself and put on his garments and offer the burnt offerings
- The fat of the sin offering shall be burnt upon the altar
- The person who let the scapegoat go shall wash his clothes, bathe his flesh, and come into the camp

- Men shall not lie with mankind as you do with woman kind it is an abomination
- You shall not lie with any beast it is an abomination
- Do not defile yourselves with any of the abominations of the nations who were before you
In this weeks special portion for Yom Kippur there are a few statements that may often get overlooked. It seems this same problem happens all through the other holy days and in scripture. Notice Isa 58:1
Isa 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
Th first thing to notice is that the warning is like the sound of the trumpet and it's purpose is to show Yisra'el their sins. It seems that many people have mistakenly thought too well of themselves on Yom Teruah and Yom Kippur. Just as they were making a feast of Pesach dinner and the scriptures warned for them to eat before coming. It seems that people have been warned also about thinking they are righteous when approaching Yom Kippur.
Isa 58:2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
They study Torah and ask for understanding of His ways yet don't realize how wicked they are, they actually count it righteousness that they are studying and freely approach YHWH as if they have not sinned greatly toward Him.
Isa 58:3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and you see not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labors.
They expect a good response to their fasting and can recount how they have done right in thier fast and in their repentance wondering where then is thir forgiveness and mercy. How wicked a servant who demands forgivness and mercy from the one they wronged. You do not reach into a mans pocket nor go into his home to take what you think he owes you. Your head should remain low until He raises it up. You do not move into His house before he has opened the door to you. How bold and foolish are those who think this way about his forgiveness and mercy. Thisnking they have done their part and can claim their prize. They exact or count their labors and find pleasure in the reward they believe is their due. I will illustrate this point with a quote from the Chumash
Artscroll Chumash pg 638
The custom to wear a white kittel on Yom Kippur originated from the white vestments of the Kohen Hagadol. The sages taught that a white garment is also symbolic of the Jews' confidence that Elohim will accept our repentance on Yom Kippur . When Yisra'el face Elohim's judgment, they dress in white, as if going to a celebration, in confidence that Elohim will accept their repentance and forgive them.
Isa 58:4 Behold, you fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: you shall not fast as you do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
Here it seems people are going through the motions thinking they will be heard for their actions. striving and debating when the fast is not for men but to Elohim whom we have wronged. We deserve much more punishment and to bow before the judge to receive stripes on our back would be mercy as opposed to death. Yet many come and expect reward for bowing down.
Isa 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to YHWH?
Isa 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?
The fast wasn't to do outward signs but to break free from your sins which you have been bound and walked in. Yoked to unrighteousness. Not as a day to wipe the slate clean for the year and to return to your sin for one more year. Was the day to erase the memory or punishment of sin or was it to erase the sin itself so you would not walk in sin. For a servant to return every year with the same sin to be forgiven make Yom Kippur a burden of slaughtering bulls for nothing. And fasting for clear concience. Yet what does the first verse say. Show my people their transgressions. It doesn't say hide them from them for another year. This is not the fast YHWH has chosen, but one that causes the man to empty the sin and not to return to it. A cry to forgive for sins and yoke broken that still require a payment. Not to remove the yoke and refit it with a more comfortable padding.
Isa 58:7 Is it not to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?
Notice it says that you bring the poor, the hungry, the naked. Not the rich, full, and clothed. Yet what people call salvation and boldness in Mashiach many times has them thinking they are rich before the reward is given, and clothed when they are still naked, and full when they are still starving. many are bothered when I say I hope I will be saved, I hope I receive mercy, I hope to be righteous. They think I must not beleive the word or I would already know I have these things and have already received them when I repented or fasted. How can I claim to be righteous in my nakedness. Does not YHWH need to lift my head before I can as much as look up. The last verse embodies the thought." and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh" This is the reason for the Holy Day. That you see yourself as you really are. That you are in need so He may give to you. Why would He give to someone who thinks they are not in need. Who says I already have all. Who lifts his own head to heaven and says I am full of all rewards.
This reminds me of what Messiah said to the pharisees.
Mat 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
Mat 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats:
Mat 25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Mat 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Mat 25:35 For I was an hungred, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in:
Mat 25:36 Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me.
Mat 25:37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungred, and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink?
Mat 25:38 When saw we you a stranger, and took you in? or naked, and clothed you?
Mat 25:39 Or when saw we you sick, or in prison, and came unto you?
Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.
Mat 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Mat 25:42 For I was an hungred, and you gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink:
Mat 25:43 I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and you visited me not.
Mat 25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto you?
Mat 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.
Mat 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
The pharisees didn't see the hungry and thirsty, they didn't see themselves as blind and naked or else he could have healed them. They cast down and looked down on those who admitted their sin and boasted themselves above them.
Luk 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Luk 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
Luk 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
Luk 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
Luk 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, Elohim be merciful to me a sinner.
Luk 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalted himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
This is the message of Yom Kippur. That you don't think of yourself more than you are. That you see your nakedness and don't hide your flesh from yourself. That you don't lift up your head before YHWH lifts it up. That you know your sins and your unrighteousness is the purpose not that you revel in the rewards of your deliverance as most Christians and Messianics, and Jews do. They forget the humble yourself verses and the sin and the reason they are humbled and sing aout being lifted up and beleive they have already been lifted up into glory. Oh that they had eyes to see their own wickedness then they could be healed. Let's not turn YHWH's holy days into feasts and thoughts of joy but remember our utter wickedness in all we do. The man that finds his own ugliness and wickedness from studying Torah has found more than all the men proclaiming the great blessings and deliverance therein. Because the they forget the deliverance is only becasuse they earned the punishment and tribulation they received. Blessed are they who are not persecuted for their own unrighteousness but are only persecuted for YWHW's sake. But as for me I deserve the punishment I am receiving and more. May YHWH open our eyes and show His people their transgression that they may be ashamed on this day and that we may realize that we are truly thirsty, hungry, and naked on this day. Shalom
A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
