Reply Quote
Efrayim
For the Book of B'reisheet
By Lovingneighbor 2006-7

This Study is on the book of Genesis also called B'reisheet which means 'In the Beginning'. In this book we have written the studies:

- Division- Parasha B'reisheet
- Prepare - Noach
- I Will Show You Something Greater - Parasha Lech Lecha
- Visited - Parasha Vayera
- Chosen - Parasha Chayei Sarah
- Take Hold - Parasha Toldot
- Be Fruitful - Parasha Vayetze
- The Gift of Grace - Parasha Vayishlach
- Rejected - Vayeshev
- Not Known - Parasha Miketz
- Draw Near - Parasha Vayigash
- Keep - Parasha Vayechi

In the book of B'reisheet when looking over my study titles I couldn't help but see the pattern of Efrayim in it. Since many people don't know the whole story we should recap it and see the limeline for Efrayim in the titles of my studies for 2006-7. Jeoboam is told to prepare for a coming division, a He was shown something greater, greater even than Shlomo's reign over Yisra'el He was visited and chosen to receive the kingdom, but His responsibility is contingent on him taking hold of the covenant and keeping the commandments, being fruitful which is also the meaning of Efrayim, and thus having the gift of grace.

1Ki 11:29 And it came to pass at that time when Yarov'am went out of Yahrushalayim, that the prophet Achiyah the Shiloni found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
1Ki 11:30 And Achiyah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:
1Ki 11:31 And he said to Yarov'am, Take you ten pieces: for thus saith YHWH, the Elohim of Yisra'el, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Shlomo, and will give ten tribes to you:
1Ki 11:32 (But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Yahrushalayim's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Yisra'el:)
1Ki 11:33 Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped ashoret the elohim of the Tzidonim, kemosh the elohim of the Mo'av, and milkom the elohim of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.
1Ki 11:34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:
1Ki 11:35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto you, even ten tribes.

1Ki 11:40 Shlomo sought therefore to kill Yarov'am. And Yarov'am arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Shlomo.

This is the beginning of the division of the two houses. It started after David when his son started worshipping other elohim. Many people wrongly speak down on Jeroboam because of his idolatry but they forget that YHWH promised him the tribes because of the idolatry of Shlomo. It was Yahudah first that sinned and Efrayim had a chance to make it right and then sinned also. They should hvae known better and so their curse was larger than that of Yahudah.

1Ki 12:1 And Rechav'am went to Shechem: for all Yisra'el were come to Shechem to make him king.
1Ki 12:2 And it came to pass, when Yarov'am the son of Nevat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Shlomo, and Yarov'am dwelt in Egypt;)
1Ki 12:3 That they sent and called him. And Yarov'am and all the congregation of Yisra'el came, and spoke unto Rechav'am, saying,
1Ki 12:4 Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve you.
1Ki 12:5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
1Ki 12:6 And king Rechav'am consulted with the old men, that stood before Shlomo his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
1Ki 12:7 And they spoke unto him, saying, If you will be a servant unto this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.
1Ki 12:8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
1Ki 12:9 And he said unto them, What counsel give you that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father did put upon us lighter?
1Ki 12:10 And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying, Thus shall you speak unto this people that spoke unto you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make you it lighter unto us; thus shall you say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
1Ki 12:11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
1Ki 12:12 So Yarov'am and all the people came to Rechav'am the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
1Ki 12:13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
1Ki 12:14 And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
1Ki 12:15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from YHWH, that he might perform his saying, which YHWH spake by Achiyah the Shiloni unto Yarov'am the son of Nevat.
1Ki 12:16 So when all Yisra'el saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Yishai: to your tents, O Yisra'el: now see to your own house, David. So Yisra'el departed unto their tents.

So the house of Yisra'el is divided and when Yahudah thinks to go make war with them YHWH stops them and says the division is from Him.

1Ki 12:20 And it came to pass, when all Yisra'el heard that Yarov'am was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Yisra'el: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Yahudah only.
1Ki 12:21 And when Rechav'am was come to Yahrushalayim, he assembled all the house of Yahudah, with the tribe of Benyamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Yisra'el, to bring the kingdom again to Rechav'am the son of Shlomo.
1Ki 12:22 But the word of Elohim came unto Shemayah the man of Elohim, saying,
1Ki 12:23 Speak unto Rechav'am, the son of Shlomo, king of Yahudah, and unto all the house of Yahudah and Benyamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
1Ki 12:24 Thus saith YHWH, You shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Yisra'el: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of YHWH, and returned to depart, according to the word of YHWH.

Then out of fear of losing the people Jeroboam builds two calves of gold which is also symbolic of doubling the sin of Yisra'el as he received the kingdom for the idolatry of Yahudah and now would cause Yisra'el to go into idolatry when he was supposed to bring them out of it.

1Ki 12:25 Then Yarov'am built Shechem in mount Efrayim, and dwelt therein; and went out from there, and built Penu'el.
1Ki 12:26 And Yarov'am said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
1Ki 12:27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of YHWH at Yahrushalayim, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rechav'am king of Yahudah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rechav'am king of Yahudah.
1Ki 12:28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Yahrushalayim: behold your elohim, O Yisra'el, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
1Ki 12:29 And he set the one in Beit'el, and the other put he in Dan.
1Ki 12:30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
1Ki 12:31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
1Ki 12:32 And Yarov'am ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Yahudah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beit'el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beit'el the priests of the high places which he had made.
1Ki 12:33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beit'el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Yisra'el: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

1Ki 13:1 And, behold, there came a man of Elohim out of Yahudah by the word of YHWH unto Beit'el: and Yarov'am stood by the altar to burn incense.
1Ki 13:2 And he cried against the altar in the word of YHWH, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith YHWH; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Yoshiyahu by name; and upon you shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon you, and men's bones shall be burnt upon you.
1Ki 13:3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which YHWH has spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
1Ki 13:4 And it came to pass, when king Yarov'am heard the saying of the man of Elohim, which had cried against the altar in Beit'el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
1Ki 13:5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of Elohim had given by the word of YHWH.

Now his altar that he was making offerings on was rejected. This is followed by the prophet sent to him to reject him being tested and failing the second test. This is the repeating pattern. That Efrayim is prepared and tested two times and failing the second time brings the greater punishment. Just as they choose idolatry after knowing the sins of Yahudah and being offered the blessing if they didn't do the same, they did and got twice the punishment. Then they made two golden calves again doing worse than their fathers who sinned in making the one golden calf. Then the prophet who did right at first then turned to disobediance is punished. This completes the pattern of what we now do in studying the torah. After seeing all those who went before us did we should have been warned. Like the children of those in the wilderness who then after going in turn to idolatry, Like Efrayim who after seeing Yahudah sin and be punished then still turns to idolatry. Like the people who came after Messiah who saw the sins of the organized religions and their love of traditions and yet still continue to this day to do things and hold things as high as the torah that are just traditions, many actually violating torah. We see that Jeroboam added a holy day of his own in the eigth month. Which to me is much how I treat chanukkah a non prescribed tradition that is treated like any other holy day from the scripture. Though he was doing something in like manner to YHWH's commandments it was rejected.

1Ki 13:33 After this thing Yarov'am returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
1Ki 13:34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Yarov'am, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

After he was rejected he would not turn back to Elohim but did evil in His sight So he is cursed.

1Ki 14:7 Go, tell Yarov'am, Thus saith YHWH Elohim of Yisra'el, Forasmuch as I exalted you from among the people, and made you prince over my people Yisra'el,
1Ki 14:8 And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it you: and yet you have not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in my eyes;
1Ki 14:9 But has done evil above all that were before you: for you have gone and made you other elohim, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and have cast me behind your back:
1Ki 14:10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Yarov'am, and will cut off from Yarov'am him that pisses against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Yisra'el, and will take away the remnant of the house of Yarov'am, as a man takes away dung, till it be all gone.
1Ki 14:11 Him that dies of Yarov'am in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dies in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for YHWH has spoken it.
1Ki 14:12 Arise you therefore, get you to your own house: and when your feet enter into the city, the child shall die.
1Ki 14:13 And all Yisra'el shall mourn for him, and bury him: for he only of Yarov'am shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward YHWH Elohim of Yisra'el in the house of Yarov'am.
1Ki 14:14 Moreover YHWH shall raise him up a king over Yisra'el, who shall cut off the house of Yarov'am that day: but what? even now.
1Ki 14:15 For YHWH shall smite Yisra'el, as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Yisra'el out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking YHWH to anger.
1Ki 14:16 And he shall give Yisra'el up because of the sins of Yarov'am, who did sin, and who made Yisra'el to sin.

Hos 1:1 The word of YHWH that came unto Hoshea, the son of Be'eri, in the days of Uzziyah, Yotam, Achaz, and Chizikiyahu, kings of Yahudah, and in the days of Yarov'am the son of Yo'ash, king of Yisra'el.
Hos 1:2 The beginning of the word of YHWH by Hoshea. And YHWH said to Hoshea, Go, take unto you a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land has committed great whoredom, departing from YHWH.
Hos 1:3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Divlayim; which conceived, and bare him a son.
Hos 1:4 And YHWH said unto him, Call his name Yizre'el; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Yizre'el upon the house of Yehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Yisra'el.
Hos 1:5 And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Yisra'el in the valley of Yizre'el.
Hos 1:6 And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And Elohim said unto him, Call her name Lo-ruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Yisra'el; but I will utterly take them away.
Hos 1:7 But I will have mercy upon the house of Yahudah, and will save them by YHWH their Elohim, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.
Hos 1:8 Now when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.
Hos 1:9 Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for you are not my people, and I will not be your Elohim.
Hos 1:10 Yet the number of the children of Yisra'el shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, You are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, You are the sons of the living Elohim.
Hos 1:11 Then shall the children of Yahudah and the children of Yisra'el be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Yizre'el.

Here the curse of Lo ammi which means not my people and the scattering is spoken onto Efrayim. This causes Efrayim to be not known as His people and YHWH being not known by them.

Hos 2:11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.

Hos 3:4 For the children of Yisra'el shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:

Hos 5:15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

Then they shall repent and once again draw near to Torah and to their Elohim.

Hos 3:5 Afterward shall the children of Yisra'el return, and seek YHWH their Elohim, and David their king; and shall fear YHWH and His goodness in the latter days.

Hos 6:1 Come, and let us return unto YHWH: for he has torn, and He will heal us; He has smitten, and He will bind us up.
Hos 6:2 After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight.
Hos 6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know YHWH: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

When they again keep his mercy and judgment, when they then keep His torah, then He shall keep and gaurd them.

Hos 12:6 Therefore turn you to your Elohim: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on your Elohim continually.

So from beginning to end we see the story of righteous beginnings with David to going astray of Shlomo, and the division of the house, visitation and choosing of Efrayim, to the dividing of the house, then Efrayim adding sin upon sin, being rejected and not known , but then drawing near and keeping Torah again and the whole house being restored. This is the whole course of Yisra'el and it was shown in the beginning (B'reisheet)

Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

Through all of this we are to learn from the patterns and sins of those before us. This is one of the great messages of the Torah. Though things started out good it was through the fall and greater fall that the warning is raised so that we knowing would be more diligent and that when our time comes we would not sin as one ignorant of this warning. This is the hope that our end would be greater than those before us. This is the hope of every new generation.

Ecc 7:8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof:

A disciple should diligently search for the truth and humbly deny and reconsider it's possession.
