Pekudei Parasha (Leap Year) Thoughts, Studies, and Comments
Reply Quote

The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Letter and the Spirit
For Parasha Pekudei
By Lovingneighbor 3-8-2008

This weeks Parasha is in the book of Exodus also called Shemot, and is called Pekudei which means 'Accounts'. In this weeks parasha:

- Moshe commands the sum of the tabernacle be counted that Betzal'el and Oholi'av made
- All the gold, silver, and copper was counted that was used to make the tabernacle
- The Ephod and Breastplate were made of cunning work
- The High Priest's robe was made
- The coats, bonnets, breeches, and girdles were made
- The High Priest's golden plate for the mitre saying "Kadosh YHWH" was made
- When finished they brought all the work of the tabernacle to Moshe to look over
- Moshe commanded to set up the tabernacle on the 1st day of the 1st month and anointed it and the priests
- Moshe set up the tabernacle and anointed it and the priests and finished his work
- The cloud covered the tabernacle and the glory of YHWH filled it and lead Yisra'el on their journeys
- Haftarah - Shlomo builds the temple and the glory of YHWH fills it in the seventh month at the feast

In this weeks parasha we see a pattern that really explains the path we all take. People may not want to see the pattern because it is an inconvienent truth. There are many doctrines out there about the Holy Spirit and whether or not you need to keep the letter or the spirit and in which order do you receive them and keep them. Let's start at looking at a few theologies and then compare them to the scripture.
First we will talk about the Holy Spirit and receiving it. many people feel out of Christianity that you accept Yahushua the Mashiach and then you are indwelled with the Holy Spirit. From there some say the Holy Spirit actually causes you to keep the commandments with supernatural power because they believe you can't actually keep them by trying (a Christian teaching that fundamentally blames Elohim for making a law that is too hard to keep.) This set of beliefs is what I call Christian baggage in the messianic faith. It speaks against Elohim's character and parenting/rulership by imposing unkeepable laws on His people and has carried over to many messianics.

People also talk about being indwelled with the Holy Spirit as some casual thing that everyone has. I disagree. As a matter of fact this weeks portion speaks volumes about the fact that this is unlikely. Moshe couldn't even come near when the Spirit of YHWH filled the tabernacle. Others who have had it we able to do miracles and it even says that the fruit of the holy spirit is:

1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

Here 9 gifts of the spirit are described, in the scriptures where people were given the spirit it talks of miracles, prophecy, speaking in other languages. So if everyone has the holy spirit where are all of the signs and miracles. we don't see the signs but we see people claiming to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Mashiach said you'll know tree by it's fruit. I think people are confused about the Holy Spirit.

There is a pattern with the spirit of Elohim embodied in the Shekinah. The pattern goes like this. People give willingly of themselves first, then the servants of YHWH who are then filled with the spirit of wisdom fashion the things of the earth into the pattern of the things of Heaven. Then they bring it to Moshe who counts all the things of the earth and looks over the things made to see if they fit the pattern shown and then gives his blessing and assemble the parts correctly so that the spirit of Elohim can come and dwell there.

This pattern can be followed in how we come to Mashiach. First we must simply have a willing heart (ie sinners prayer of repentance) then we give up our earthly things and present them to Moshe (ie evaluating our actions and sins according to the torah giving up our choices and presenting them as an offering), then YHWH's servants the second level after repentance is to be His servant. They are filled with the Spirit of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. We get this by studying the Torah and the Spirit of the Torah. They then fashion the different parts of the tabernacle(ie molding each area of your life to conform to the Torah) then the total of what they offered is counted (ie the choices every man judged by their works). Then they are measured according to the heavenly pattern (ie not just the letter of the law but the spirit behind it also like Mashiach measured) Comparing the letter and the spirit of their choices with the law and spirit. Then if it is all correct Moshe will give a blessing. From there the anointing of the servants of YHWH happens which is likened to being covered by the spirit represented by the oil. The second witness of this is when the Spirit of Elohim fills the tabernacle ( ie don't you know you are the temple of Elohim) and Moshe not being to enter is like the schoolmaster being the letter and John th Baptist not being as great as the Spirit or Mashiach and having to step down in comparison.

The goal is the Spirit and what I think gets confusing is that people confuse the willing heart or willing spirit with the Holy Spirit. They confuse their feelings with the Spirit of Elohim. There are three times along the journey that the concept of a Spirit comes into play. The first is the willing spirit. The second is the Spirit of Wisdom they are learning from Torah which like the moon reflects the true light and Spirit of Elohim. But the last is truly the Spirit of Elohim in which we hope to be indwelled in the end. The one so powerful that those in it's presence cannot bear to stand or speak. This is not some light thing people are running around with. The Spirit of Elohim is Mighty and powerful and if people were even in it's presence let alone filled with it they would know and it will not dwell in an unclean tabernacle not fitting the complete pattern of the heavenly tabernacle. This is a goal but first we battle with whether or not we have a willing heart and this battle may be won in one area and not another. Then we must learn to form all of our choices after the Torah which takes time to build the pieces. Once we have all of the pieces the Torah Represented by Moshe will assemble them in order and we will get the most out of the Torah. Blessing will come and a Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, and knowledge. These things are from Elohim but not to be confused with the true things in Heaven. Once these things are assembled I believe we are ready to be born again and have the ruach or spirit dwell in us. These patterns all hold true and what I have found is usually bad theology isn't always about the wrong verses or interpretations, but many times it's the wrong timing or order. This is just my two cents on the topic and of course I could be wrong. Who is so wise to attain such knowledge. But to me it weighs greater than the common misconceptions. So to summarize the Letter and Spirit interact on different levels and at different times in the process and sometimes having a willing Spirit that is still wrong is not the Spirit of Elohim, but a Spirit of willingness, and having a spirit of knowledge is not having the full Spirit of Elohim. Being filled is complete and I do not believe we will have that until as Mashiach says we are one with him as he is one with the Father. Shalom
