Mattot Parasha Leap Year Reading Thoughts, Studies, and Comments
|
|
|

|
The goal of this section is to get everybody's studies, thoughts, and opinions on anything in the weeks parasha. This includes, word studies, thoughts on verses, history, related subjects, and anything that may help us to understand this Torah Portion. Even if it's just an observation on the smallest part, it can help others who may not have seen it that way. The goal is then as we visit the parasha (Torah Portion) each year we will create a collection of studies and thoughts on this portion and everyone will benefit by having a broader view of the portion. Shalom!

Your Word Shall be Remembered
For Parasha Mattot
By Lovingneighbor 7-26-2008
This weeks Parasha is in the book of Bamidbar also called Numbers, and is called Mattot which means 'Tribes'. In this weeks parasha:
- YHWH command Yisra'el to keep their word if they make a vow
- If a woman living in her father's house make a vow when he hears it he may disallow it or let it stand if he says nothing
- When a woman's husband hears of a vow his wife made he may disallow it or if he says nothing it shall stand
- If a widow or divorced woman makes a vow it shall stand
- If a husband hears his wife's vows and does nothing and then later disallows them he shall bear her lawlessness
- Moshe sends 1000 from every tribe to make war with Midyan
- Yisra'el destroys Midyan and their cities and takes their women captive
- Moshe was angry and told them to kill all male children and women who have known a man
- The men of war are commanded to be purified outside the camp and to purify all the spoil
- YHWH commands Moshe to divide the spoil in two for those who went to war and the congregation and to give portions for the Levi'im
- The men of war all offered an oblation of their spoils because not one died among them
- The children of Re'uven and Gad ask to inherit the cattle land on this side of Yarden and they shall fight with Yisra'el until they inherit their land
- Moshe makes a vow with the children of Re'uven Gad, and Menasheh, that if they help Yisra'el in war they may inherit Gil'ad
- The children of Re'uven, Gad, and Menasheh build their cities in the land of Gil'ad
- Haftarah - Yermeyahu is told he shall be a prophet and he shall go and tell Yahurushalayim what will happen to them
In this weeks parasha we see a strong message about your word and how it will be remembered. The word for speak is the root word for "word" and is Dabar H1696 Spelled Dalet, Bet, Resh. Which in the ancient Hebrew can be door, house, head. Which I understand as the door of the house on the head being the mouth. This is interesting compared to the next two key words in the first two verses of this weeks parasha. The next word I want to look at is the word for vow which is Nadar meaning to promise or make a vow. This is spelled Nun, dalet, resh. Which in the ancient Hebrew could be Seed, door, head. This also like the word for word and speak can be understood to then mean the child's mouth. With seed meaning heir and then door of the head meaning mouth. The last word to look at is then the word for this weeks parasha Mattah which means tribe, branch, rod, supporter of life. This is spelled Mem, Tet, Hey. Which in the ancient Hebrew could mean Waters, Vessel, revealed Which I would interpret the words, of the people revealed. Water in the ramez is equal to words and the vessel is likened to people.
So let's put them together and see what they may have in common. So we see that words are the door of the house on the head which takes us back to the garden and we see Elohim who speaks to His children which make up His house and then another speaks to the children (the serpent) and whoever they listen to becomes both their father and their house. Now we see the meaning for vow being the words from the children's mouths. These define them. They will be like their father. This will define their house and their tribe.
Is it possible that the tribes are either the tribes based on specific words of Elohim or maybe they are defined by the words they speak and their actions. These traits could define who is from what tribe. This can even be seen in the groups of people being defined many times by their language or customs. Many times different tribes have different dialects of the same language and also have slightly different customs.
This goes into this weeks parasha about making a vow and the accountability of your words. Things vowed are set apart. Names set you apart and words created the seperation and definition of all things.
People now don't nearly understand the power of words. Words can share love, words can kill and wound, words can judge and bind you. Words are the door between the inside to the outside. They let us express outside what we feel and think inside. In this way Mashiach is the word of Elohim who allows people to go from outside through the door to the inside being from flesh to spiritual, outside to inside of the kingdom, and outside to the inside of Torah, and from death to life. Mashiach embodied this as he took his disciples from understanding the written outside literal word of Elohim to the spiritual inside words of Elohim. He was the word. The word is the door.
The scripture says:
Mat 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Mat 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
Mat 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Mat 12:37 For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.
The parasha then goes into the weight and authority of words. So the father's words could override or cancel the words of his daughter. Not knowing or being able to discern the authority of words has gotten religious organizations and their followers in big trouble. People all the time get titles like pastor or rabbi to give their words more authority. But usually this is done to try and control others and create followers and even to overrule the very word of Elohim. It starts by their word being greater than their brethren, but it is from there that they sometimes make an attempt to even rule over the word of Elohim by calling their interpretation or words, Elohim's words. This is an attempt to take control in the absense of Elohim or Mashiach. This happened many times in the Torah and then YHWH had to show who his real servants were.
Then you have the command to war with Midyan who has caused Yisra'el to go whoring after their god and women. This is tied also to words because in the same way of joining something that shouldn't be joined, we see words are the same way. The whole paleo Hebrew alephbet is pictographs joined to make words. In this concept we see the mixing of words as in the garden. Truth with lies. This is done in most churches and synagogues every day. Many big statements have been said by people supposedly speaking truth and speaking for Elohim. I think even if they forget what they said, YHWH will not forget and they will be judged like the men talking with Iyov (Job) who didn't speak right about Elohim. Men who may be a mix of truth and lies try and teach others who will as weaker vessels attach themselves to the leaders like women sleeping with someone other than their true husband Mashiach and turning Elohim into a lie by wrongly interpreting the scriptures and feeding it to others. This concept of mixing with lies is why most Messianics and every other religion think they are right and others are wrong, wanting to quickly establish leaders and men who think their words are truth. These men then spread these lies to a lazy and willing congregation to live them out. These pastors and preachers are like the harlots of Midyan who cause Yisra'el to be joined to lies and false worship. But Moshe who was very angry with the captains who kept women who had already known men and tried to bring them as spoil who have already caused Yisra'el to sin. Moshe represents the Torah who will eventually stop this from happening. The baggage from Christianity and Judaism that isn't truth will be shed and there will be a cleansing for the spoil of Midyan.
I think Moshe the Torah should say what are you doing mixing with these women ( mixing these traditions and lies with the truth). This is what preachers do every time they misuse scripture as Satan did with Mashiach in the high place. The word of Elohim is pure and true and I look forward to the day when he will shut the mouths of the false shepards leading his flocks. That is the power of the words of truth.
Finally Re'uven and Gad ask if they can have the land on this side of Yarden for and inheritance and Moshe reminds them of the impact of the words of thier fathers who discouraged Yisra'el and killed the people for not going into the land. Then they vowed to go over and fight with Yisra'el and gave their word they would do that before returning to their inheritance.
This whole section is about words and their power. How foolish are our mouths? How many foolish and evil things do we say all the time? The scripture says we will give an accounting for every idle word. I think we are like kids who are always so close to danger and don't realize it. We are the same way with our words and not knowing their power. Our words may bring us death but YHWH's words bring life if we will live by them.
Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Elohim.
Let's all work on watching what is coming out of our mouth and start to speak right things because they are being recorded and we will have to answer for the truth or lies coming out of our mouth. Guard the gates of your mouth and bind your tongue from speaking evil. Shalom
